that is Colour and Petrol to us English.

It really started to irk when the US invaded EEErack. Not to be confused with Iraq.

The influence of Americanisms has been apparent since at least WW2.
Picking up a few American phrases and pronunciations is the least of our problems I'd say.

I think I might be right in saying that using contractions like 'CAN'T and WON'T became more common due to American influence during the War and after.
