I know most people have their mobiles with internet, camera and all that stuff. So I have an address book on my laptop, but most of my everyday stuff is recorded in a paper diary. And I have a separate camera in case I fall in the water ,...again Any thoughts ? Edited by Forest Hillbilly (19 Aug 2020 8.11am)

My dear wife (Aged 66) still keeps a small diary in which she enters appointments etc etc, so never uses the diary available on her mobile phone.

I use technology out and about as it is smaller to carry at home I have a travel diary so when I get back from holiday I like to write it all down for memories. A good lady friend hates technology and claims she doesn't need it. Well she doesn't she is always getting me to look things up on my phone.

I know an aged chap in his 70s whom I contact on his mobile phone on a fairly regular basis. When he wishes to contact me,which is rarely, he resorts to looking up my number in his paper diary.

Edited by Forest Hillbilly (19 Aug 2020 8.11am) Some phones are waterproof now so modern technology has found a way around that one too . I get what you mean though, So many people appear to clamber for the latest technology, but bells and whistles aside it just does the exact same thing that a more basic approach like a pen and pad or old style phone would achieve. A mate of mine still has an old Nokia phone. Phone calls, texts and that's about it. There's something to be said for the simple life.

Pen and paper doesn't automatically back itself up, technology means you can drown as many phones as you like without losing your information, come on Ali... get with the game. BTW that is the same reason I have access to all staffie's collection on all my devices, you can't put that in a diary.

But on a nostalgic/practical level, when holidays in sunny countries were available, I used to love picking up a used book to take to the beach. No obscuration from the glaring sun and a made-up bookmark from a scrap of paper. And a sniff of the paper pages And MP3's 5hlt all over tapes, CD's and vinyl. take the good with the bad Edited by Forest Hillbilly (19 Aug 2020 3.02pm)

And taking photos on film. The processing took many days and much £ wonga, and most of the pictures came out black. Nowadays digital cameras have done away with all that cr@p, and Photoshop sorts out any issues. So modern photography has taken away a lot of the skill, but is that a bad thing ?

And reading your AA map to get to 'the north'. I used to have hand-written post-it notes on my steering wheel to come off the M1.

Out walking a couple of months ago I found a dairy, it had a lot of information and some personal details in it, if I was that way inclined I probably could have done a lot of damage. Moral is if you write everything down keep it safe. It had a name that popped up a lot of times with a phone number which I rang and explained I had found her friends diary which she popped round and collected.
