...when the pubs are open of course. Such is the nature of addiction. How many people have you encountered whose addictions are so embedded ? that even when wearing a hospital gown with an armful of tubes....but they still need to shuffle downstairs for a pint and a smoke ? Getting a stern talking to from a specialist while reeking of all your taxed drugs.

At the age of 16 (1984) I was in a hospital ward of 6 men. We were next to the Fire Exit, so 2 smokers used to regularly "shuffle out to the top of the stairs". One guy was admitted who stated he wasn't on any medication. He was given some stuff that induced an epileptic fit, because the idiot had failed to state he was taking steroids for 'body building;. Then the patients Christmas time drinks involved leaving cans of beer on the outside window ledge "to chill". I cannot berate anyone. We all have our baggage to carry. As a motorbike rider I once gave a pillion lift to someone with a broken leg (in cast) to the pub, and back.

And going for an alcohol assessment a few years ago and showing my alcohol intake, my doctor said,..."I drink more than that". human nature is a bummer,...and that is not meant to be anti-gay

A very close friend of mine was a heavy drinker I have seen him pour cider on his corn flakes. Anyway he was rushed to hospital with Peritonitises which is acute stomach pains it is said to be the worst pain you can suffer next to child birth. After a week of agony they got it under control and told him that drink was killing him and that part of his liver was already dead and would never recover. He stayed off the booze for a few months then went back on it and later got hospitalised again for Peritonitises (repeat wash and rinse). Eventually he was told he needed a new liver but by the time he finally gave up the booze he was too weak for the operation assuming of course they could find him one. The inevitable happened. I still miss him but I am also angry this was a long slow decline he was first told to stop drinking over 20 years ago and told me "what do doctors know". He could and should have stopped instead he left his wife and teenage daughters without a father. It's now 4 years since I have drunk alcohol whenever I wobble I think of him.

I have worked with a number of functioning alcoholics and equally those whose lives have been both destroyed by and ended prematurely by drink. Same with drugs both prescription and not. Seeing someone's life destroyed by addiction is horrible. For me though the saddest is gambling. That is a slow road to ruin and I have known some who have lost everything. Booze and fags and other drugs will probably one day kill you. Gambling can make you want to kill yourself and damages everyone around you.

I think we all have addiction stories, and it is important not to glorify them. Also had mates go down the mental health route because of addiction to weed. That stopped me from ever touching the stuff, again. Life isn't fair, but you can better your chances by not doing $hIt.
