Got a live lead water pipe going into out building, need a connection for a washing machine, how much would a fair price be. And would it be a straightforward job? living in South Wales so prices would be lower than London prices Attachment: IMG_20200626_133007.jpg (3,397.03Kb)

NickyF I think people would probably need a little more info the photo isn't very clear (to me). Is the water pipe in the photo the kitchen? How far is the pipe from where you want your washing machine? If it is a few feet then you simply add connecting hoses. Otherwise a plumber would probably need to lay copper piping which may involve drilling or digging out walls or lifting floorboards and running the piping underneath them. Rather than cost I would look at man hours it is probably no more than a 1/2 day job hopefully less plus material costs. I would go onto one of the trade sites like Trust A Trader for your area which will give you an idea of what they charge locally. Hope this helps.

You need a lead lock. It is probably 13lb if it is a water main. This is the thickness of the lead and the lead lock will fit over the lead with a neoprene washer and a special split cone shaped olive. A lead lock goes from lead to compression for copper. Quite simple if you can isolate the lead main. (Probably your house main)

Are you sure its lead as it could be steel looking at it. If you can scratch it with your nail its lead. If not its steel. You can buy connectors for ths as well but they are plastic to a female thread.

My mate couldn"t believe how reasonable he was, but he said he loves grafting and his hobby is driving and the motorways of britain, can"t get enough of them apparently, he said if he wasn"t driving up to glasgow to do a bit on the side, he would be driving up north anyway, for pleasure, getting his hands dirty is just a bonus, apparently he"s from margate or canterbury, somewhere in kent anyway! Good luck with it mate, hope cryrsty can help!

The big no no, and my mate said no no, is when paying chrysty, my mate pulled out a few twenties, chrysty nearly hit the roof, cash? CASH? No fcukin way mate, NO way! He proceeded to wnwrap his cloth plumber bag, with a spanner iron on transfer on, and take out a card machine! Card only said chrysty, card only! Just warning you mate, good luck!

Card only as I want to record the wage so I can pay the correct tax and NI. Bites you hard when you lie as to your earnings. As many sole traders have recently found out. Still never mind they cant be stupid enough not to save some cash and dividends for a rainy day. Surely they did.

Loving the advice and the banter between the posters, I had a quote earlier £200 and they will dig down a few inches, put an underground fitting to the lead coming out of the ground, with an alkethine fitting with a stopcock converting from alkathene to copper then a washing machine connector on the end, I would have a go myself with either a lead loc or a philmac utc , but as its a live pipe and quite old and the only way to shut it off is via the street stopcock i would prefer a professional to do it ,
