No, not a chance to rob some toilet roll from the shop. An interesting story on a footballing enigma. I never saw him against the Palace - maybe someone can enlighten us (Willo).

One of the very best players a bit like Rodney Marsh I knew Charlie Hurley( did national service at the same time) and spoke with after Reading played at Selhurst on a day when he was unplayable.

He threw it all away with his lifestyle.

Think Rod Marsh-Stan Bowles-Rachid Harkouk and that type of player mixture, a brilliant nutty box of frogs, loony genius,

An old friend of mine (Now sadly deceased) was from the Reading area, was educated at Presentation College in the town and was a supporter of the club.He spoke very highly of Robin Friday, a player who was revered by the supporters.

He wasn’t when I saw him but as he died 12 years ago I feel quite unkind saying so.

This is what I wondered about. I suspect we must have been in the same division for a year or two and then gone up the league with Big Mal.

Looks like it was his last goal for Reading before being sold.

I used to watch him play for Hayes in the old Isthmian league in the early to mid seventies. He was a long haired cross between George Best, Rodney Marsh and Stan Bowles - an absolute sensation in non league football.

I seem to remember seeing him score for Reading against Palace at Selhurst. I thought it was a 2-3 defeat for us but it was a long, long time ago.

I have been meaning to get the book for years. Maybe now is the time as I have time to kill at home.
