its obviously “f***s luck” that meant we never played in europe, what could have been. nobody other than us remembers the zds cup.

English clubs were banned To be precise Liverpool were banned the rest of us were allowed back in at the start of that season. Then at some point during that season UEFA allowed the scousers back in which deprived us of our place.

English teams were banned from European competition in 1986 following the Liverpool vs Juventus final in Brussels. In those days there was the European Cup, UEFA Cup and Cup Winners Cup. I think teams finishing 2nd, 3rd and 4th entered the UEFA Cup. On lifting the ban around 1990 I think UEFA only allowed one UEFA Cup place for English teams - for the team finishing second and sadly that was Liverpool who only finished a few points above us IIRC. Arsenal won the Championship in 1991 and Leeds United (who finished below us) went on to win it in 1992. There's a school of thought that with a bit of investment that could have been us but unfortunately Noades wasn't willing and the team broke up - not helped by some crass comments he made about the black players in a TV documentary.

I seem to remember it was the rule that if liverpool finished in the top 2, as there were only 2 places for europe, the third team would take their place, nobody thinking it would be us, when we did, the fa or uefa changed the rule that liverpool, who had served 5 years of their 8 year ban, would be let off the final few years and could qualifly for our deserved place! Ron noades did try and get all the first division clubs chairmen to back him in a campaign for justice, but nobody wanted to upset the fa or uefa, so we missed out, makes you wonder why we bothered in those days, was so corrupt, nothing compared to in scotland thou, with rangers having everyone in there pocket, refs and fa! Thats why i like var, it can only work for the likes of us against the glamour teams, so wouldn"t moan to much about waiting a minute or two for a decision, we might of been 1-0 up early on in the fa cup final the other year with it!

UEFA decided when they banned English clubs after Heysel in '85, that when they allowed English clubs back in, Liverpool would have to serve an extra 5 year ban.
