PVA's positioning

When an opposition's winger is going down their right wing PVA often position's himself on the left line of the penalty area rather than mark their winger. Surely he is told to do this by the coach or management as this happens so often. I would like to think he is not making a mistake every time by not marking the winger.

I think it’s in hodgesons game plan / setup.

I suspect this was under instruction from the coaching staff who wished to keep a narrow back four.

I have noticed this with Ward too for years. I used to think that he was hideously out of position because when the winger receives the ball he has all the time in the world to control it and decide what to do. Contrary to this was Bassaka who stayed closer and got tackles in earlier. Also when Ward plays the ball forward it mostly gets blocked and goes out for our throw albeit a bit further down the field. Still, Bassaka was worth £55 or so million so he must have been doing something right. Does anyone know the stats regarding how our goals have been conceded this season.

Roy definitely likes us to defend narrow. As for PVA, defensively I think he benefits from Cahill playing left sided centre half. Pure class and I hope we can get a couple of seasons out of him.

It does appear that the full backs do defend on the edge of the penalty area which as has been said must be deliberate. The problem I have seen with this is that any crosses that are sent to the opposite far post leave us very vulnerable to opposition wide men or full backs.No doubt management are aware of it anyway but interesting observation about PVA nonetheless.

Our strength as a defensive unit is with our two centre backs being fantastic in the air. Sakho, Tomkins, Cahill and Kelly all great in the air and can soak up crosses all day. It's far more dangerous for us to show the wide man outside than let them drift in. How many times has a wide man drifted inside only for Luka or someone else to foul them on the edge of the box? A quick read of this shows that positioning is everything for a full back and differs depending on who they are up against. I would imagine that PVA and Ward are exactly where they are told to be to play to our strengths.

To be fair PVA put in a goalsaving tackle on Saturday with the score at 1-1 on Anderson I think it was who looked certain to score, we then a few minutes later got the winner. Love the penalty PVA took cool as you like.
