Modern tv equipment compared to just a telly

All the different set top boxes and remote controls Was life a lot more simple when it was just a telly with 4 channels and it turn on instantly?

Get yourself a Logitech Harmony remote and then you can get rid of all the others. Most of the tuning in is done automatically nowadays and they certainly didn't turn on instantly in the old days as the valves had to warm up first. Watch the cricket on an OLED screen and you'll never want anything else as you can see every blade of grass. I wouldn't even go back 10 years let alone further than that

Incidentally as this thread is about TV equipment - I used to be heavily into home cinema and spent many thousands of pounds on AV equipment with expensive in wall speakers and a giant American subwoofer which nowadays only ever seems to be used to fall asleep in front of

TV technology is outpacing the broadcasters at the moment. I keep meaning to buy a new 4K but what's the point. There is very little 4k broadcast at the moment so you are looking at streaming services and DVDs. Meanwhile 8K TV's have been launched so I assume that the broadcasters are sitting on their hands wondering if they should just leapfrog 4K. Sky is supposed to be switching from satellite to broadband delivery. However this keeps being postponed which suggests that they may be looking at leapfrogging broadband and just going to 5G as it is rolled out. So for now I will stick with my creaky old HD TV until I know which way this is all heading or it conks out after the obligatory 5 years.

The problem with sound quality on Sky is that they would rather use their bandwidth to cram in more channels rather than increases the quality of the broadcast. By the time 8K is affordable my eyesight will probably only be operating at 1K levels so my current TV will probably be my last one - unless it breaks
