Peter Beardsley has been banned from football for more than seven months after being found to have racially abused young black players at Newcastle United – including calling one “a monkey”. In his defense, apparently Newcastle never properly trained him. Take a moment to process that. It's somehow Newcastle's fault he was never properly trained to not hurl racist remarks at people. In the TV shows Lucifer and Hawaii 50 two of the regulars refer to their kids as "monkey" and they are all white and "cheeky monkey" certainly used to be a very common phrase when referring to one's kids

Beardsley himself seems to believe he was stitched up. If you say to kids that they should be used to climbing trees - why is that racist to black kids? Are we all so thick we think that black kids in Britain come from the jungle? And as for monkey - I take my kids (well used to) to a play center called monkey business.

Yeah, it could be that rather than being trained not to be racist, he needed to be told that certain words like ‘monkey’ are now banned, no matter what the context or intention. Remember Hodgson’s ‘feed the monkey’ story when England manager? Even though clearly no offense was intended, and no offense was taken (by Andros Townsend), Hodgson had to apologise.

Guess it comes down to what context it’s used, I.e was it derogatory. Certain phrases are deemed derogatory whilst others aren’t. To abbreviate an Australian they become an Aussie which is fine. Do this to someone from pakistan and you’re in all kids of trouble.

Whilst I am not condoning what Beardsley said I wonder if he meant it as a joke or banter rather then as an insult. But in today's World anything said or done is immediately taken as offensive by somebody somewhere and a punishment is dished out. So, on that basis it will be interesting to see what punishment Mr Trudeau faces in the coming days......
hats off to palace, they were always gonna be louder, and hate to say it but they were impressive ALL bouncing and singing. |

If you're only calling your black players monkeys and then telling them they should be used to it, which he allegedly did, you're a racist.
