They must think women are pretty dim if a man representing the fire service somehow means they won't be able to connect with the profession.

All being equal I definitely wouldn't want anyone excluded from this or any other profession, but the actual task at hand has to be considered. A mate of mine is a fire fighter and it sounds like it requires significant physical strength. As you might expect really. If anyone can meet that standard go for it, but most will be men and if I'm in a fire I'm hoping that the person most capable of helping is the one who got the job.
