So yet again, another big project is under threat due to escalating costs, campaigners against etc...will ANYTHING ever be built again as planned?

Spot on. A recent addition to the list is crossrail - whatever happened there, thought it was finished. Now lapsed into 6 monthly bailouts not opening for 2 years. The costs of HS2 are mind-boggling, a true money-pit.

Most infrastructure projects are though...its the financial pay off in the long run that matters and the benefit to the country as a whole. £30bn overrun is less than what we'd be paying the EU! Get it done as far as Birmingham...THEN review stage 2! I'd prefer them to then look at The Northern Powerhouse rail project instead, which aims to connect East to West and would light a fire under the Northern economy.

You may well ask what benefit is HS2 anyway? Does it connect to Heathrow, Europe, things modern Britain needs? No, it connects to Euston. Enjoy your time-saving - you will be able to use the tube just like everybody else.

It's a line that goes though several "key marginal constituencies" and a "brave" political decision. Best to get a inquiry in place before an election and ensure the outcome of it is announced afterwards to minimise the impact on votes. Phase 1 on its own offers the lowest benefit. It may even have been better to start in the north and work their way down, but it's been assessed as a stand alone project. For phase 1 land had been bought and construction has started. Stopping halt way through would cost loads and deliver £0 economic benefit. Might as well finish it, especially if some of the funding is borrowed money from private sources. The real benefits will come when phases 2 and beyond are added.

It takes an hour 50 mins to get from Warrington to Euston on Glasgow express Virgin West coast. We have never needed HS2 just need the line from L/pool to Leeds fully electrified and updated. Cost would have been a fraction of what has already been wasted.

However if the plan is to build a high link up the spine of the country to Scotland linking the major cities and also have branches to Wales and the Southwest then it maybe justified. as jeeagles states it probabley would have been better to start in the north.

The costs of HS2 are mind-boggling, a true money-pit. Scrap it, suck up the sink-costs (dreadful as they are), ensure the consultants are never retained by HMG ever again. Next steps: Plough money into the aforementioned Northern Powerhouse lines, AND a rapid high-freight-volume connection between Tyneside and Liverpool. Then establish free ports in both. State aid in both regions to kick start industry and economy feeding off the Free ports. Ensure all bidding contractors will use UK labour as much as possible. All possible if we leave the EU. Not possible (as under the Withdrawal Agreement) if we're told we can't diverge from their "economic model", subject to their state-aid rules, customs union and procurement diktats. The south has had enough money pumped into it. It's time we re-balanced this country.
