Interesting quotes from Michael Buerk that are bound to be rather controversial

This is something I brought up on HOL within the last year. I didn’t go as far as left to die but I did state about the amount of care being reduced. Of course if someone has a heart attack then an ambulance goes whatever. But if someone is making a choice to eat themselves into heart disease then if some areas of the nhs are going to have to be reduced this could be looked at. I included that if there is history of mental illness or depression etc that has led to overeating and obesity then that should be taken into consideration. But it’s the people who clearly don’t give a fvck and then go ‘come on treat me’ after excessive drinking and eating for years then unfortunately some lines are going to have to drawn to treat the unlucky rather than the knowingly not giving a sh1t. The knowledge is out there now so there’s not many excuses left. The younger generation are actually improving here but of course adjustments to pension age etc is going to change, but all of these ‘tools to do so’ or ‘education’ is losing sympathy. I’m going to contradict myself a bit with education of children who’ll go onto need care as adults, but again, doctors should be made aware, with records held of children raised in households where obesity has happened as a result of the parents’ ignorance usually.

Eating and drinking yourself to obesity is slightly different because the chance of you becoming unwell and needing care is much more certain than anything else apart from perhaps motor sports or horse events and activity, which I still think is a lot lower down the % chance of you needing expensive health care and the numbers needing it, often because they know there’s no need to be responsible for their own health. Most of the people entering GP surgeries in the adult age groups before old age are overweight or pregnant or with their sick children. You don’t see many people who look after themselves in there very often. Or we raise taxes or remove other care for the unlucky. Or both. Edited by Rudi Hedman (07 Aug 2019 12.46pm)
