This could well be an ignorant post as I do not follow golf all that closely and am even less familiar with the history. So more of a question rather than an ill-informed opinion - has the level of Golfer improved significantly over the decades due to sports science and engineering innovations with golf clubs etc? Very similar to football. It seemed to me when watching yesterday that there were around 5-6 in the chasing pack that on a different day easily would have won. From what I've seen of golf as well, it does seem a different player wins every tournament now, as opposed to one outright vice-grip (I vaguely remember this in late 90s/early 2000's with Tiger but could be remembering wrong as a child). Reason I say all this, would it have been a lot easier for a top player like Jack Nicklaus to reach those numbers because others around him just weren't that good or didn't have the money invested in it? Genuine question because as I say, watching yesterday with everyone having an expert caddie, an expert training course in their back garden, sponsorships coming out their ears etc, it seems it will be mighty hard for Tiger to win another 3 in quick succession. Is this a fair assumption?

Bloke got caught with his trousers down and went from being the media's darling to revealed as a slease bag over night. Back injuries my eye, he's been playing s***e through shame. Still, he played some good shots yesterday along with some horrendous ones and luckily he got gifted the to trophy as everyone else completely lost their arse holes. The lazy media are given a fairytale headline and don't have to analyse a poor competition and he gets to bow out redeemed. Should he retire that is, which he should.

Is this a fair assumption? Standard of golf has improved significantly and nowadays tournaments have much deeper fields. Result of a few things: 1) equipment (particularly golf ball) make it much easier to maintain control whilst swinging fast 2) professionalisation - better athletes, better methods, better data to drive practice etc. 3) Tiger Woods. He massively increased popularity (and therefore money) in the game. In 1996, total PGA tour prize money was just under 0m. Tiger won his first major in 1997. By 2001 PGA total purse was over 0m. That sort of money drives more kids to play, investment in the game at all levels etc. which ultimately leads to more, high quality players. Re Tiger winning another three in quick succession, agreed, that will be challenging, although Jordan Spieth and Brooks Koepka have both recently won three majors within relatively short periods (12-24 months). He very much was not gifted the trophy. I would hardly call birdying 3 of the last 6 holes being gifted the tournament. One player in the top ten shot over par (Molinari) - everyone else was under par. Why would he retire? He lead the open with 9 holes remaining and finished 6th, finished second at the PGA and just won the Masters.

You're probably not a great fan of his but the guy deserves some credit for showing his determination to succeed. Fortunate he may be but under those circumstances many might have fallen by the way side years ago.

Give over, He was 2 behind Molinari going into the back nine and his tee shots were all over the gaff. Koepka, Finau and Molinari went in to the water to gift him a chance of being in the top 3, all of the rest messing up their back nine too. There was a three way tie for the lead at one point. Credit where it's due, his putting was superb. Hardly vintage stuff. Great headline for those who don't like substance though.
