I'm always fascinated by the huge press coverage given to it in the UK as well as the large number of people that watch the presentation live despite the fact that they probably haven't seen any of the films and don't go to the cinema anyway.

Of the nine films nominated last year for Best Picture I still haven't heard of seven of them and watched Shape of Water a few weeks ago.

The speeches are generally cringe worthy and Halle Berry was one of my all time favourite females until her Oscar speech which made me realise that I was madly in love with some of the characters she played and not the person herself.

Not Oscar related but in recent years I have often thought that Emily Blunt was the woman that I would most like to marry and then she appeared on the Graham Norton Show and was all giggly and "look at me" and it put me right off her

The Oscars used to be The Thing, for actors and directors.
downloading and internet have made them almost redundant. It used to be a big thing to put your hands in wet concrete next to a gold star.
Everything has it's moment.

I've seen some very good films at the cinema in the past few months. I'm falling back in love with cinema again. (mainly because it affords me 2 hours of entertaining the wife, whilst she refrains from talking, and still has a good time)

Good acting. Well done. That's your job

Football isn't immune from this, of course.

Man of the match players player goal of the month manager of the month team of the week footballer of the year PFA player of the year manager of the year ballon d'or best matchday pie....

I think they ought to replace the whole scheme with long service awards/loyalty rewards.

"Well done, you've been in the film industry for 30 years and made one film that sold a few DVDs, you can pick either a golf ball with your initials on, or a faux leather briefcase with a combination lock."

Scrap the awards, these people make too much money to get all competitive with each other about who did the best acting.
