We need a striker and should of never got rid of Gayle. He has scored goals at every club he has been at and didn't really get a chance for us apart from coming off the bench or playing on the wing. He's quick and a natural goal scorer. Who would take him back? I would! I never wanted Gayley to go. We are in desperate need for a goal scorer like Dwight! No good in PL. Great goal hanger and poacher but we need more than that.

Do you really think that the Toons are going to release him from his loan deal to then sell/loan to us ?

Personally, I think Gayley would have a hatful if he was playing for us right now. If this season has shown us one thing, it's that there's no substitute for natural striker's instinct and finishing ability. But Gayle is a well trodden debate in these parts.

Do we have to repeat ourselves again...? yes a great player in the championship but on evidence clearly doesn't cut it consistently in the premiership. A massive NO from me.

A massive NO from me. What evidence? The guy has scored more goals than Benteke who cost 30 million just to replace him. 6 goals and 3 assists last season for Newcastle. 17 goals and 1 assist in 3000 minutes for Palace against Premier League teams, that seems like a pretty good record to me. Gayle is a decent Championship player no way good enough for the Premiership. The player we should have kept is Glenn Murray.

Edited by mattteo (21 Jan 2019 9.24pm) Stats on their own don't tell the whole story. Very few doubted his ability to finish, actually one of the best natural finishers I think we ever had BUT he did not have the ability to play as a lone striker, always needed a second striker alongside him to feed off. Of all the goals he scored how many were as a lone striker? How many of the 17 goals were game changers that made up the sacrifice elsewhere in the team to play him?

I also think he is too good to sit on the bench in the Prem. When we signed him at first, I always felt he was signed with one eye on relegation. But we never got relegated. If we were in Fulham’s position then I would sign him. But we are not.
