Ok once we leave the EU what policies should we follow? we will have a massive trade deficit diminishing GDP (at least for 50 years according to JRM); how do we improve our position or try to pair down cost further after a decade of austerity.

Wtf I agree, it is not like they ( based on what you are saying : the socialist scum) saved like a private sector employee. those who sit back in the public sector biding time and drinking tea. It's a known "truism", about employees in the state sector or public owned companies like Leyland or the coal mining industry in the 80s. Any way nice to see no ideas so far.

Wow this wasn't my first thought but I admire your courage as politicians are apt to say. My thoughts in no particular order: - Reduce the foreign aid budget to emergency assistance only. In return agree free trade deals with key countries that will lose out on the money. Help them grow their way out of poverty. - Delegate most powers returned from the EU back to national assemblies, return power closer to the people. - Reform VAT e.g. tampon tax and other anomalies. Look to reduce the tax when we can afford it. - Tax breaks for companies that invest in technology and training. - Proper apprenticeship schemes - Digital tax on Facebook etc. If you want to book your profits in Luxembourg then F off there. Otherwise pay tax in the UK. - Scrap HS2 to save money. - Scrap Trident if a cheaper nuclear option is available e.g. missiles launched from aircraft? - Replace the Human rights bill with a UK bill of rights and responsibilities. - Incentivize students to take degrees in skills that the nation needs by forgiving student loans e.g. Doctors, Nurses. - Rename St Pancreas Station Brexit Central just to p*ss off the French when they arrive by Eurostar. That all for now I must admit not much though and no costing.

My initial idea was meant to be stimulating ideas, bit blue sky, bit out of the box. some good ideas in there, some won't generate GDP, but intersteting : scraping HS2 will save loadsa money, personally I think we need Trident ( not the gum) and a strong military to maintain our global place and security council place. Students, not everyone needs a degree and a return to 70s levels seems correct but funding for voacational courses and further tax breaks for apprenticeships. Indeed I would also put at least a couple of pennies on lower rate income tax to pay for a stronger military and associated science research. Edited by pefwin (17 Jan 2019 9.13pm)

For me its just as much about focusing internally, as externally. We need to become a little more self reliant on energy, manufacturing and agriculture...we export most of the latter two, so lets start buying british again. The economy is over reliant on the finance sector so we also need a way to wean oursleves off of it and re balance the economy accordingly. Infrastructure investment and changes are also a must...for me the northern powerhouse would need real investment to again, better balance the economy and redistribute wealth the country has. I also like Badgers thoughts on Apprenticeships....and lets shake up the Parlimentary structure...get rid of the stodgy out of touch f***ers and have something a little more dynamic and forward thinking!

The main Brexit group made a promise which as they are not the government they could never keep. And then the government recently increased the funding to the NHS to about that level. But this is the post Brexit thread so my bad. Some good suggestions here I really do believe that after a few bumpy months we will be fine. The next challenge will be to find a government that has a vision sadly lacking at the moment.
