Does anyone understand it? Apparently it's meant to replace meaningless friendlies with meaningful competition especially in years without a tournament But I still don't understand the format

Not definitively, but... The best I can tell is that only one team in group A can win it. And it counts toward Euro qualifying.

its perhaps to do with ranking points. Some countries were being very cute with their playing or not playing friendlies to boost their ranking so they get advantage at the Euros or World Cup. Or perhaps £. Anyway it can't be worse than friendlies. The format as I understand it is that there are 4 leagues of 12, with the best nations in league A. Each league is then split into 4 mini leagues of 3 (groups). Each nation therefore plays 4 games. The 4 winners of each mini league then play off to win the league. The 4 teams at the bottom of their mini leagues are relegated. The 4 teams at the top of league B are promoted. Its not very league like in my opinion but what do I know. Parrot

And I just answered my own question about Euro 2020 qualifiers. The traditional ones start later than usual - in March - then there is a very odd and complicated tie-in with the Nations League...

so does this mean runners up on qualifying no longer qualify for the euros? it seems like it's bad for teams like England not favourites to win these friendly leagues, occasionally not winners of our qualifying groups. also, simce the leagies are one a season, but qualifying is over 2 seasons, does that mean it's not every year that league success matters? anyway, I like the format and would love domestic football to do similar

No it doesn’t mean that. Not in a rude way, but if you go back to the link I posted, all is explained. The top 2 in 10 ‘traditional’ Euro qualifying groups go through automatically. These groups start next March, and will progress in the normal way. The other 4 places will be via a knock-out tourney involving 16 teams, and some of the 16 places will be decided by how well teams did in the Nations League. Incidentally there is no automatic place for a host nation in Euro 2020, as there is no host, as such. I imagine that a similar concept will apply to future World Cup qualifications from Europe ie a combination of trad qualifying groups followed by a ‘repecharge’.

Me again. Look at it this way. Say England does sh!te in the Nations League. It won’t matter for Euro 2020 qualification, but to qualify, they will need to finish first or second in their (eventual) qualifying group. However, if they do well in the Nations League, they can gain a (let’s say) ‘insurance’ that they will at least be in the play-off tourney for the final 4 Euro 2020 places, should they ultimately finish third or lower in their ‘traditional’ Euro 2020 qualifying group.

England will almost certainly finish top 2 I the traditional qualifying group so Nations League an irrelevance to them Will be funny to see the Group D Nations League winner in the Euros though - might be Luxemburg, San Marino or Andorra in the Finals!

I say give it a go.
