50 appearances in 3 seasons is a pretty poor return, but before he broke his ankle he was finally looking like a useful squad player. My guess is we offered him reduced terms based on his injuries and lack of games and he thought he could get a better offer elsewhere. Personally I'm glad he got to finally give us something to smile about but I would be disappointed if the club had given him another big contract as I'm not convinced of his ability to stay fit and in good shape.

I wonder which club now gets him in a ‘free’ so he can score against us when next we meet. Wolves?

He was on an 80k pw salary. He’s simply not that level of player.

Looks like he only started 13 league games in three years, as most were substitute appearances...dont think he will be too much of loss

Before his injury he really was turning into the player we thought we had signed a few years back. Amazing what an incentive a new contract can be!

On the plus side it ' frees up ' £70-80k a week. On the downside we are now 3 players light. Roy has already said that the squad is too small and made reference to funds available. Nothing much changes eh....

The Cabaye offer was surely because they need funds to buy a quality new midfielder (plus a loan).

Antonio would be a good replacement for Sako as well as provide competition in a number of positions on the pitch. Salary I would imagine would be about the same so it would be purchase cost only as the sticking point. If Townsend goes then Antonio is a must buy if that is who Roy likes. I don't agree with the serial complainers on this site that we desperately need to be buying shed loads of players. We have many returning from injury which should put us in a much stronger position than we were at the start of last year. Yes, Cabaye and RLC need to be replaced with similar quality, however it looks like Roy appears happy with Benteke, Sorloth and Wickham up front so I'm beginning to think that we will not buy a striker unless one of them leave. In summary I think we currently need 3 outfield players, so will watch with interest to see how it unfolds over the next couple of weeks.

Couldn't agree more that Sako was not value for money - which I think was your point - but the fact is that he leaves a gap in the squad that needs to be filled.

Not that long ago we were saying a SACK O’ potatoes would be a good replacement.
