In France. No real risk of mass slaughter in the absence of colonial wars in N Africa or Indo-China but good for teaching a generation of effete, cosseted Facebook-obssessed ponces about social responsibility. We should do the same here.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham

I see nothing that actually relates to national service here. Sounds more like community service to me.

Broadly in favour but with caveats. It has to include everybody, no exemptions for religious grounds / beliefs or university graduates. So it will have to be a program that the various faith groups can sign up to. I would not expect people to go and fight that should be left to our military.

It will need a clear purpose, what are you trying to achieve? Discipline, fitness, education, social responsibility?

It must also include rewards to incentivise. In Switzerland National Service is popular because it is fun and people make friends. It was embedded in to Swiss culture so if you want a career it is expected that you perform well in your National Service. Do well in you NS and your employer looks favourably upon it in your chosen career.

So lots of detail to work out but it could work and once the first lot have gone through it if they enjoyed it and felt it made a difference they will spread the good word.

My dad did his NS in the early fifties they taught him to drive and to become an electrician so apart from being shot at in Egypt he enjoyed it.

If it gets the woofters off the streets and out of their beds, what's not to like?

They get a cool pen knife out of the experience there as well. Can see the appeal.

I'm all for a bit of community service but I'm definitely not in favour of anything involving the military.
If people want to join the military, that is their choice but I didn't even send my son to the scouts or guides. I wanted them to be individuals and not brainwashed by the other organisations.

Wouldn't be fair on the crims to nick their gig.

The Girl Guide Association doesn't allow boys to join.

I was in the Scouts, and it was great for team building experience. No brainwashing whatsoever.

However, getting into the Guides proved far trickier!

Me too. I learned far more about real life in the Scouts than I did at school. Teamwork, leadership, conflict resolution, planning and budgeting, presenting and public speaking, resolve, plus a raft of practical skills. Also mixing and getting along with kids from completely different backgrounds.
My Scout leader - a copper who dealt with youth crime - was the biggest positive influence on my life other than my parents.

The country is too far gone.

The army is even criticised for using harsh language nowadays.

Yeah. All that too.

But did you get into the Guides?
