Are you a blood donor? If not why not?

My older brother has a rare blood type AB- when he lived in this country the NHS had him on speed dial for emergencies. I must confess I was lazy and didn't bother donating until about 4 years ago.

I am the common blood type A+ which I though was boring until they told me that A+ is great because they can give it to most people even with different blood types.

So why are you not donating? Everyone bangs on about how great the NHS is well here is your chance to return the favour. As long as you are fairly healthy you should consider it.

Are you scared? The NHS do their best to make the process as painless as possible. I only ever feel a small prick no big deal. The bag and tube collecting the blood are behind and below you so you don't see the blood coming out of your arm or into the bag.

The process takes about 15-20 mins, add in waiting time and I would say about 1 hour overall. Plus you get tea and biscuits. More importantly you feel great about yourself knowing that you have helped someone else.

Are you embarrassed? Yes there are questions about recreational drugs and anal sex but a nurse will discuss this with you in private. Personally I have never been embarrassed or felt that the staff were anything less than professional.

So c'mon guys and girls click on the link below, register and book an appointment. Remember you could be saving someone's life.

Peace and Love.

I’ve been a donor for many years but recently have given up because, as you say the actual process takes about 15 mins, the waiting is ridiculous, over 90 minutes at the last appointment. And that is a booked appt, not a walk in. I understand it’s not a race but to watch the staff apparently wading through treacle to do anything made me so angry, boiling blood is not useful apparently. And there were empty beds aplenty, not like I was waiting on donors. So my decision is sod em, if they want my blood so much they can get staff who are more interested in the process instead of their mobile phones.

I used to be but when I moved to Oz they didn’t want my blood because I had lived in England during the mad cow disease era so I lapsed.

OK I appreciate not everyone has the same good experience. I donate in Bromley it seems to be the same staff each time they are well organised and know what they are doing. Sometimes they get delays because the caretaker forgot to open up or something like that. I haven't seen any of them sitting on their backsides though.

I don't know and would not like to speculate. There is information on the website about do's and don'ts, clearly you would not wanted tainted blood given to a seriously ill person.

There is also a helpline which I have phoned on several times. In my case I had taken headache medication a few days before before my appointment. The helpline was very good and I did not have to reschedule.

The Bristol staff seem to be very efficient, and on the whole , friendly.
Asked why they moved the donating from the new stand at Bristol city and was told that they where charged £600 a day to use the concourse area, just makes me hate Bristol city even more.

Question for CPFC - will the new stand have a donor suite (with a suitable bank of televisions)?

Naturally the kudos of both players and supporters (literally) giving blood, with no charge to National Blood Services would be worth having. COYP

Not a bad idea. I was disappointed when I realised that most places (public halls, sports grounds etc.) charge the blood donor service hundreds of pounds. All they are doing is providing the space the NHS provides everything else.

It would be nice if someone started a name and shame social media campaign to get these money grabbers to waive their fee. So yes it's a good idea if we could have donations at the club. Lets face it the fans already give the sweat and tears. I assume there will be an area big enough inside to handle the donors, bar area, lounge etc.

Mr Parish why not volunteer the club (and not charge).

I only started a couple of years ago and have no idea why I didn't start sooner, other than being terrified of needles there's no reason not to. Also just received confirmation of being put on the bone marrow registry.

Sadly this is akin to my experience, and is the reason I gave up after over 20 donations. On one occasion I donated at lunchtime; told my boss I’d be an hour or so, and she was very supportive. Cut a very long story short...returned to work 2h 45m later! And that was for a booked appointment too. The lukewarm cup of tea and custard cream biscuit were insufficient compensation.
