Always been a bit of a fake rivalry to me. Never really got it. Our natural rivals are Millwall and always have been.

The only problem with that is they think of us in the same way as we think of Charlton; i.e. they don't. It's them and West Ham that are rivals; we don't figure on their radar unless they're playing us and then we're treated no differently from anyone else they play.

We didn't play them between January 1963 until August 1974 - so if you my age, you never saw them, you didn't know any of their fans and just not on any radar. Millwall used to be terrifying, particularly when they were in the Holmesdale.

Just that they hate the Whammers more. We don't really have the Clowns on our radar, they are division 3 s***. Joke club that no one cares about.

Should have tried being in the Old Den when we scored in the FA cup tie 1975, has my scarf slashed by a knife when we scored. Mind you, been back 13 times since; once to watch the daggers, as my son is trying to do the 92 club.

I sometimes find the Brighton rivalry a bit embarrassing. I like the town of Brighton. The Sussex countryside is lovely. I like walking along Seaford Head. Their fans are mostly alright really, apart from the few who take it too seriously. Palace fans are guilty of that too. I've got no reason to hate them. I even gave some money to their fighting fund when they were going out of business. The most tragic thing about 'the rivalry' is that it's based on a temper tantrum thrown by Alan Mullery. Good grief. It's not a culture clash like Barcelona Real Madrid is it? It hasn't got the overtones of Celtic Rangers or the historical significance of Portsmouth versus Southampton. It's because Alan - The Tank - Mullery threw some money on the floor and said we weren't worth that. Lets stop commemorating the bad temper of Alan Mullery shall we? With you 100%. It’s a false, manufactured rivalry which is so daft it’s laughable. We’re 50 miles and 2 counties apart, never heard of each other before the Mullery nonsense. But I still hope we kick their arses good and proper. COYP

Edited by OhthisbloodyPC (14 Apr 2018 11.14am) Correct, they are not in the same county let alone the same city, there’s no deep routed historical reason, no trading rivalries between the areas, no religious differences, it’s pure and simple – a genuine footballing rivalry based on the fact that both clubs used to play each other a lot and had managers happy to stoke up the fires of rivalry.

Brighton would be better off having Reading as rivals. Very similar clubs and fans. Still, they are our rivals so I hope we thrash them today.
It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses. |
