...and he's now been arrested on suspicion of Murder.... What are peoples thoughts on defending your own property and self defence in the home leading to the death of the perp? Edited by Lyons550 (04 Apr 2018 12.00pm)

It's sensible to arrest him until the full facts are known. The BBC article is thin on facts so it is difficult to comment further on this case. However, generally, I think anyone should be able to defend themselves and their property but it shouldn't give them the right to murder someone.
It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses. |

Yes need to get the facts but if the intruder was not there in the first place up to no good then this would never have happened so to a certain extent brought it on themselves.

Murder will never stick but manslaughter may depending on the facts but in view of the fact that the homeowner was 78 I can see him getting off whatever he is charged with. I am a hardliner on the subject of burglary and believe that stabbing a burglar should be allowed

Thought of someone being charged for defending their home doesn't sit well with me. Unless you can prove that killing/injuring the burglar was completely unnecessary i.e. you already had him tied up or locked in a room with all your family safely outside then I struggle to see why you should convict someone.

self defence doesn't give you carte blanche to kill someone (the farmer who shot a burglar running a way from his property, for instance, while I sympathise, was stretching the definition). However, in this case, from the little the BBC have said so far, he's surely unlikely to be charged (2 burglars, armed with a screwdriver, force him into the kitchen where the knives are = "oh dear, how sad, never mind"

The media wording is kind of inflammatory. For example, when Islamic State murdered unarmed hostages, it was described as 'executions'.
I disengage, I turn the page. |

Comes home to find two blokes half his age in the middle of a burglary and then gets threatened by at least one of them. Shouldn't be charged with anything. The second intruder should go to jail and think himself lucky.
Optimistic as ever |

If someone breaks into your property as far as I'm concerned they are fair game, if they get hurt or worse then so be it.

My wife’s grand parents used to live in a ground floor flat on a council estate in Tulse Hill, everyone used to worry about them, but her grandad was a proper ‘harry brown’ he used to say ‘if anyone gets in here I’ll kill the b******, what they gonna do, put me away for life?? At my age I could be in me box anyway time they get round to it’ Good luck to this old boy
