For the younger members Vince was one of the first black players at Palace. He took racist stick each week not from the odd fan but whole stadiums. Yet to his credit he and the other trailblazers just got on with it. Great player fantastic skill unfortunately the final ball often left him down. He should have been better and should have scored more goals. Never the less he was my hero.

As with Billy Gilbert, Vince hung around with us too long when the wheels had fallen off and then went to Pompey which probably wasn’t the best career move at the time, unlike Kenny sansom who got out just in time and got a move to Arsenal. But for the memories of our promotion season to the top flight and the first season up he was a little legend and so exciting to watch. This will be my Portuguese holiday sunbed read

He also played at a time when skillful, fast players could be kicked by defenders; tackles coming through the players heels were common.

Dave Swindlehurst had a flat in Forestdale (on my paperround) and Martin Hinshelwood also lived on Forestdale. Years later Simon Rodger moved into a house in Forestdale next to my Mum when he was playing for the first team in 1999 - 2002.

Vince will probably make more in book sales than we did in his footballing days and Good Luck to him.

As far as I can see Wil^H^H^H skilful, fast players still are kicked by defenders. The only difference is that now it's against the Laws, a rule that is honoured somewhat in the breach.

Just read his book while away, thoroughly enjoyable read though sad at times. A great insight into the game before the money and sanitisation spoiled it and an eye-opener to some of the managers of the day!

Wonderful player and a joy to watch. A boyhood hero in fact. Very much the Zaha of his day (although often lacked the final pass) Didn't he once take part in a friendly involving blacks v whites? Imagine the PC brigade if that game was played today.

Turned up as a Father’s Day gift yesterday, perfect . However reading the foreword by Kenny Samson was interesting , I always thought he left us due to his debts and bookies in Livingstone Road, however according to Ken it was all Venables doing , Kenny didn’t want to leave ! You absolute c*** Venables
