For me it’s fulham, I lived there and went to sixth form there during Hodgson’s time there. A friends little brother had a season ticket and no interest in football. Got to see a lot of football without feeling too gutted when the team I was backing lost. Saw every Europa match at home as well. What about you guys? Is it a local team, a non league team, are you based abroad and need your matchday fix via the MLS or Seria A team near you? What team have you seen play the most times that isn’t the famous red and blue?

Do you mean seen as been there primarily for them and not because they are playing Palace? I went to Spain in January for a long weekend and saw Real Madrid. Fantastic stadium, fantastic football, fantastic ground tour and lots of memories - terrible fans with no atmosphere. Selhurst rocks more than the Bernabau. I loved the experience but there was a bit of me terrified I wouldn't enjoy Palace again after seeing the world's best. It very quickly dawned on me that passion, association and atmosphere mean much more than the football on display. Sounds obvious but in my mind I was always going to Palace for the football, turns out this is one of the last reasons I go. Aside from that been to a Chelsea European match with a Chelsea supporting friend. Don't like them though so can't say I had any fears I'd come out a dreaded "2-team fan".

When I was a kid I would wake up Saturday morning and ask dad where we were going as Palace were away. We would go to the London game of the day, just turn and pay on the gate. I guess my second team would be Charlton I still occasionally go as I have Charlton friends. You have to be 50+ to remember the days when you would just turn up it gave me an appreciation of other teams. I think it is sad that it is so difficult to see other teams unless you really drop down the leagues.

Yes I too visited Real Madrid this season and concur with these sentiments.Relatively muted atmosphere with noise being generated by their equivelant of our HF,all adorned in white behind one of the goals. I too availed of the stadium tour - perhaps a photo of 'Yours Truly' standing opposite Ronaldo's locker should be my profile photo on HOL !

I used to follow Epsom & Ewell 40 years ago as my parents house adjoined their ground and I could watch the matches out of the landing window. In 1975 they reached the FA Vase final at Wembley and my father and I went up to watch them get beaten. They had a good team and at the end of that season sold two players to Charlton and a third to Millwall. Six years later I watched their new signing the 20 year old Alan Pardew four years before he joined us

My sisters boyfriend (now husband) back in the 70’s took me to Chelsea lots as he supported them. Loved watching the Osgood / Hutchinson attack. They are probably the best combination I’ve seen in all my years - great forwards. Charlie Cooke and Alan Hudson were also great players with Peter Houseman being an unsung player with a great cross. However, I couldn’t get into the spirit of wanting Chelsea to win (it was always Palace for me) and I only ever enjoyed a goal when the opponents scored. Think he stopped taking me because of that :-) They were never a second team but have seen them the most after Palace.

Wimbledon. Back in the 80s I would go to Plough Lane with a couple of mates as their matches didn't seem to clash with palace matches. There was a great (cheap) bar under the stand. I stopped going when we were in the same division and have only been back a few times. In recent years it would be Fulham but only occasionally.
It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses. |
