I was flicking through some old programmes and came across this flyer for a game to be played at Selhurst Park on Friday 14th April 1961 against Bangu of Brazil.

Whilst I have been to Rio and know the area I must admit I had never heard of them and it seems strange why a game had been arranged against Palace.

It appears that Bangu won the 1960 New York Tournament but was their prize a trip to London to play Palace?

I cannot find anything about the game, result, attendance etc.

Can anyone shed some light on why it was played and the result?

All I remember about that game (I didn’t go) was that I believe Bangu won 2-0 and people were interested to see how Palace would play without Johnny Byrne, who didn’t feature, because they were being called a one-man team in some circles (a bit like now in fact). The general consensus was that Palace played well, but were no match for the Brazilians. Palace were promoted from Division 4 at the end of that season.

I feel sure I was at that match, but I can't find the programme. But while looking for it I came across the programme for a game against Bratislava, on 31st January 1962, and the second paragraph of the programme notes for that match reads as follows: "Our last floodlight friendly took place in April 1961, against Bangu, the South American team, when we lost 2-0 after a wonderful display by both sides."

Yes I remember that Bratislava game. We won 3-2 I seem to recall. I've probably got that programme somewhere too.

So you are Brazilian but you don't follow Brazilian football !? That is very strange.

City played a similar formation to that against us last week

Great to see some of these bits of memorabilia. This is from way before my time. As a kid I always liked to look at the different flags from old friendlies palace (and some international matches I think) had played which were displayed in the old family enclosure.

I saw the Slovan Bratislava game but I would never have remembered us playing in tangerine, as the programme says.

I'm guessing that that was to make the affair more striking under the new-fangled floodlights.

Also, I note that the officials didn't have too far to travel!

The Bratislava names are pretty good:

Urban - City Smart
Popluhar - gets invited to all the party's.
Obert - what his wife says to him during sex
Hrdlicka - What Obert does to his wife so she says
'O Bert'
Sedlik - what Oberts wife said to him during a bit of S&M "I SEDLIK"
Lasso - Very good at tieing up defenders in knots.
