I accept that I might get pelters for getting this off my chest but it’s been on my mind for a fair while...what does Cabaye actually do to benefit the team? I don’t actually know what his best position is after 2.5 seasons with us. He doesn’t seem to be a defensive midfielder-strong in the tackle and protecting the back four. Nor does he appear to be an effective attacking midfielder- creating chances, grabbing assists and/or goals. I’m regularly left disappointed by his set piece deliveries. Yes, he does appear to have a decent stamina and can seemingly hassle opponents but I’d expect no less from a Premier League footballer and I’m continuously left asking myself, ‘what DOES he actually do?!’ When we signed him, he was our elite, supposedly world class player who stood out above the rest however I feel he’s fading into complete insignificance. Any comments much appreciated.

He would be much improved if he left the dead balls to Milivojevic and then went to the edge of the box or just outside to try and pick up the second ball which he could then shoot from or clip into the heads of our forwards. I guess they leave Milivojevic out there instead because he is good at stopping a counter.

His set piece delivery is abysmal and needs to be taken off them ASAP. When he signed I thought we have finally got a world class player but it unfortunately has never materialised.

I think Cabaye is the best passer in the squad. Nothing elaborate, just continual give and go. He keeps it tidy. Palace are in a dodgy patch do we need to pull together

he has quality and class for sure. i would like to see more aggression from a fella in midfield. Get out and intimidate the opposition. Jedi was ferocious, michael hughes also. cmon yohan. less of the gentilhomme, more of the bete noir. Edited by PalazioVecchio (11 Feb 2018 11.25pm)

When we signed Cabaye there was a certain expectation of him given his past record. In my humble estimation he hasn't lived up these expectations and he certainly isn't the player he was at Newcastle. He is now 31 and just doesn't have that energy and drive of yesteryear.I suspect we won't see him at the club next season.

I always think he's one of the best players on the pitch. Only him and Luka can really pass, we need him to control games. What we're missing is an in-form Jason Puncheon ahead of him and then an in-form Benteke ahead of him. The whole thing fulls apart when Cabaye can play a forward central ball but we have no one that can do much with it. That's when he has no choice but to go out wide to Zaha or Townsend, the only 2 players that can do anything attacking wise. That's not Cabaye's fault. One of our better routes of play was Jedinak doing a direct through ball to Glenn Murray in our promotion season. Cabaye is MUCH better at this type of pass. Only trouble is Benteke doesn't move like Murray did. However, like I mentioned, Puncheon used to be one of our better players, meaning that Cabaye had at least another central option before Benteke. It's really, really noticeable that we don't have a central attacking midfielder or a striker that can do anything. That isn't to knock McCarthur, who's fantastic but should really be playing Cabaye's position when Cabaye isn't playing, not in front of Luka and Cabaye, he isn't a number 10. In fact the only 10 we have in the whole squad now since Bolasie left (who was more a winger anyway) is a badly out of form and injured for rest of season Puncheon. Even with a fully fit squad, it's a problem area for us. Yet another position I'm surprised we didn't address in January.

There has much been mentioned in this post about passing the ball. For a while I have been singing the praises of Shelvey who would be very effective for us.I accept he has his problems on the pitch with discipline but my goodness his range of passing is to be admired. He was MOM against Man Utd today ! I totally agree that we needed to strengthen the midfield 'Engine Room' - we signed Rakip but he hasn't played since November/December.
