All, As I do every year, I over indulged in Christmas and racked up a 4k credit card bill. I managed to transfer it over to a 30 month purchase card 0% and all was good with the word. I went to make my first payment yesterday online and the credit card has disappeared from my online banking. I then come home to a letter saying basically 'yes, we said you can, but no, you can't' So this 4k has now disappeared, where do I stand? How do I pay it off? Who do I pay it to? and how can I now transfer that to another card? Cheers in advance.

God knows, but something a bit similar happened to me. I had a current account with the Bank of Jock and they pi$$ed me about a lot and were horribly rude every time I spoke to them, so I dumped them and opened an account at First Direct, who are excellent. Anyway, the cutover got delayed over the month end so my salary went to the new account and all the bills came off the old one that month, and when the BoJ closed the account it had a debit balance of about £2,000, which money was in my new account. They kept sending me snotty letters demanding the money, but were prepared to make themselves look like a village full of idiots rather than accept the payment. Three payments by card over the phone were happily accepted only to be returned to me days later. A money transfer from First Direct refused to go through. Eventually I went to a branch with all my cards and a cheque book, where it took four managers half an hour to determine that they too couldn't accept the payment. In the end I had to send a cheque to their head orifice by recorded delivery with a letter stating that they had seven days to bank it and send me a receipt or else I would consider the debt null and void. Funnily enough they were able to deal with that. (I had their debt collectors onto me by then but they were even ruder than their clients were, so I wasn't about to pay them so that they could get a cut). If you obtain a loan or some such to deal with the balance that method of repaying the old balance might focus their minds. Edited by chateauferret (04 Jan 2018 9.49pm)

£4K at Christmas? I'm interested in how long it takes you to pay it off. Are you on Towie?

My favourite tale of revenge on a bank: A friend of mine used his bonus to pay off and close a credit card he no longer wanted. But, because banks over here use a two-month average for calculating interest (which should be illegal), they sent him a subsequent statement because he owed interest even though he'd paid the card off the prior month. He entered into a prolonged and completely pointless battle with the bank. Eventually, he gave up and sent them the interest they were demanding. The trouble was, the argument had run on long enough so that it had rolled into a subsequent billing month and now - because of the two-month average nonsense - he owed interest on the interest. It was about 75 cents. This sparked a new round of calls with the bank, as he tried to get them to waive this paltry sum because it was going to cost him more than 75 cents to send them 75 cents, and it was going to cost them more than 75 cents to receive his 75 cents. This made perfect sense, of course, which is why the bank refused and demanded payment or they'd post a delinquent report against him with the credit bureaux. So he sent them a cheque for a dollar. Now they owed him 25 cents. They sent him statements confirming his credit balance for a about a year, and then sent him a cheque for 25 cents plus interest.
We don't do possession; we do defense and attack. Everything else is just wa**ing with a football. |

With me being the eldest at 24, and my youngest brother being only 17, the 'rents have never been able to go away by themselves, so I've sent them off somewhere nice. Complete one off, and at £500 a month, I'm hoping to have it finished by August.

I also managed to spend a sizeable amount as I have noticed in recent years that late December is the best time to book flights abroad. That and replacing my eight year old plasma with a modern OLED TV My trick is to pay for anything expensive with my usual credit card then transfer the balance to a Barclaycard as they offer 22 months interest free credit for a fairly nominal fee of 2.9%

Just out of interest. How long is a debt valid? When I emigrated I tried to pay of my Vodaphone mobile phone account then about 10 years ago I got a forwarded County Court letter (to appear at Hull Magistrates ) saying I owed them 50 odd quid. After trying for ages afterwards trying to pay them up I gave up the ghost as they wouldn't accept any form of payment.

But unfortunately for you "If the creditor has already obtained a court judgment or order before the limitation period passed the debt can never become statute-barred".
