Anyone else find it odd that Roy seems to prefer Ward over Fosu-Mensah at right back? I know Fosu-Mensah can play anywhere along the back line and even in midfield, but the only real available position for him in our team is at right back. Apparently Jose Mourinho sees his long term position as replacement for Antonio Valencia at United. I thought he looked the nuts in a couple of games, Burnley away springs to mind and when he came on against West Ham in the second half. Pace and power, with a good ability on the ball. Surely he should be above Ward who i still feel is vulnerable at times, and other teams seem to target that side of the pitch against us

Yes, me. I can only think that Fosu-Mensah was brought in with a back three in mind and that Hodgson playing 4 at the back sees Ward as a 4-back-line man and Fosu-Mensah as a wing back. But as you say the latter's versatility should make that no issue. But WTF do I know?

Ward is ours and Fosu Mensah is a loan player. Ward's confidence was destroyed by the experiences with our previous manager. Ward is an EPL quality player and has proved this by his performances over the years. Yes he has made mistakes this year but so have most of the defence. I agree that he needs competition for his place but so far he has seen off all players we have brought in to challenge. I think FM is a good player and will probably be world class in the future however it won't be for us and Ward is more committed to Palace cause so I hope he is offered a new contract and stays with us

Start mucking with their mojo and he's the first to get overwhelmed. That being said Roy is the correct medicine for him. Im happy wards back playing decent football, hopefully he'll sign an extension and be here next year when we can start bringing wan-bissaka through, What we kinda know for sure is TFM won't be. Maybe Roy understands the long game... And yes Wan-bissaka can play right back. He's our future.

Neither is capable of playing there at high level in my opinion. Fosu Mensah might make a good center back

Just me who thinks Ward has played very well as a defender and not a wing back. Got an assist at the weekend with a perfect ball.

Even though Ward"s performances have improved recently it doesn't make up for his poor form for at least 2 years! I would much prefer Fosu-Mensah playing RB,he is quicker, more comfortable on the ball & a better dribbler which is needed in the modern game. Ward used to be 1 of my favourite players but I now hope he doesn't sign a new contract & leaves in the summer.Teams target him for a reason & we really need to strengthen the quality in the RB & LB positions either in Jan or the summer.

In spite of Ward's precise assist for Wilf (2-1 Everton), he's our weakest link. Too many passes astray, slow, give away free kicks (in dangerous positions) too easy and often out of position. On the other side, seems an awfully nice bloke...

The Wig's Top Trumps verdict, inauthentically all scores out of 100: Wardy: Brainsy: ...TFM edges it on most metrics but needs to curb his exuberance. I guess Hodgson wants positional discipline, much of which Wardy has gleaned from experience. *Doesn't Ward's contract expires next summer? If so I'm not convinced his being a Palace player makes sod all difference.
If you want to live in a world full of kindness, respect and love, try to show these qualities. |
