Surprised this hasn't been brought up yet. According to TM at pmqs just now, 4 out of 5 people using UC are satisfied with it. That still leaves 20% dissatisfied. Good idea badly implemented? Lots if reports of people being evicted because they have to wait so long for any support.

Lots of people evicted because of the benefits cap ? and also they do not pay rent direct to landlords anymore, giving all the cash to claimants You can talk about nasty tories and the poorest in society bearing the brunt for austerity cuts etc but I feel this misses the point slightly, the idea is that people are weened off benefits and we stop the benefits culture. More should be done about minimum wage though, lower corporation tax and business rates and increase the minimum wage. Then work really will pay

It has been brought up in parliament with a 300 vote majority (tories abstained too ashamed) for labour and others. The motion to halt it, sort it out so people are not evicted etc. However like the EU vote it is an advisory vote and, unlike the EU vote they just carried on anyway. Like anything the main thing is it does not happen to you but it is an outrage. Poverty is being reborn in society by the conservatives deliberately.

The wait of over 6 weeks to get any money is far too long. Those in social housing can probably get away with missing a couple of rent payments but those in private rented accommodation are finding landlords aren't quite so accommodating, this is the sector where evictions are happening. Good to see TM announce the lifting of the benefit cap towards social housing rents.

But seriously, benefits in the UK pays s**t, and most people claiming universal credit and tax credits, work 16 hours a week to top up their benefits. I don't think you can 'ween people' off benefits, without having a viable alternative (which is jobs that pay reasonable wages) or capping rents etc. I'd say its reasonable to tie a cut in corporation tax and business rates, to a rise in the minimum wage.

UC a good idea in theory, but bungled (like most other things) by the government for ideological reasons and ineptitude. Makes work pay as long as you don't actually get a job as the taper rate is effectively a 63% tax rate (imagine the reaction on here and among Tory grandees if that was the top tax rate). Things like payment in arrears and unifying the system is all well and good but it has to be done competently and with proper transitional arrangements. Also the fact that cash no longer goes directly to social landlords is such a bad idea. A universal basic income, combined with proper top rates of tax, fair taxation of capital (vs income) would be a much better idea, easier to administer and have significant benefits to people's productivity. It would also have a massive beneficial impact on mental health.
