Well, I'm glad I got out of there. It was turning into a real s*** hole back in 2001.

According to this. Unhappy places appear to be areas where immigration is high and the happy places look like white flight middle class areas.
No surprise I hear you say. It's all about socioeconomic factors no doubt.

Croydon has always had a dour unhappy feel to its soul since the town planners let rip back in the sixties and when it was 99% WASP. Nothing to do with immigration. It's just the essence of the place.

Oh, yes i forgot. You are totally right. Croydon was rated the no.1 place to live and the brightest, happiest town in the whole of the UK back in 1992. Big tourist destination too.

That was until immigrants arrived. Thanks for putting me straight.

Croydon used to be seen as reasonably middle class in the 80s to us streatham residents

Is this true or are you just extracting the Michael. Why on earth would a tourist go to Croydon?

When D.H.Lawrence taught in Croydon at Davidson School, he considered the people far poorer than in the mining areas he was from.

As a youngster in the 80s in south London I didn't even regard Croydon as London it was middle class Surrey

You are right. I had a mate who lived in Tottenham, when he came to Croydon (well a mutual friend in Shirley) he said it was like visiting the countryside.

I used to work in Croydon until I managed to escape to Haywards Heath in 1978 and it was a dump back then but from reading the Croydon Advertiser I don't think it was as bad then as it is now
