John Le Carre is one of our most respected popular authors. He worked for M15 and M15,has been around the block and even those on the far right would have difficulty in suggesting he is not a "patriot". Speaking this week,he said: "Something truly, seriously bad is happening... These stages that Trump is going through and the stirring of racial hatred..a kind of burning of the books as he attacks,as he declares real news as fake news, the law becomes fake news, everything becomes fake news... I think of all things that were happening across Europe in the 1930s,in Spain Japan, obviously in Germany. To me,there are absolutely comparable signs of the rise of fascism and it's contagious,it's infectious.Fascism is up and running in Poland and Hungary. There's an encouragement about. ..These are infectious forms of demagogic behaviour and they are toxic..." Worrying times, illustrated when some now even seek to claim an equivalency between fascism and anti-fascism. nb. I messed up the thread title. Not enough space,Last word was "sentiments"Mods can you amend last two words to "fascism"? Edited by legaleagle (09 Sep 2017 1.02pm)

Edited by legaleagle (09 Sep 2017 1.02pm) Well I'm glad you and John Le Carre think this is a major concern. I think Europe has much bigger and more pressing problems to worry about personally.

John Le Carre (real name David Cornwell) who, when Salman Rushdie was sentenced to death by Islam for writing a book, instead of defending Rushie, said "nobody has a God-given right to insult a great religion and be published with impunity".
We have now sunk to a depth at which the restatement of the obvious is the first duty of intelligent men. [Orwell] |

Oh dear. So old Dave, ahem, I mean Mr Le Carre, is a bit of a dickhead after all.

Our two resident literary connoisseurs completely ignore the point,as they usually do about anything relating to the resurgence of fascism.Wonder why. As for Rushdie, this is what he had to say of Le Carre:"really admired Le Carré as a writer. I think of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy as one of the great novels of postwar Britain." And Le Carre said of Rushdie:"And if I met Salman tomorrow? I would warmly shake the hand of a brilliant fellow writer."

So old Dave thinks that Rushdie is a good author but almost suggests that threatening to kill him for writing a book was justified. Nice.

Employee of the month is a good example of how someone can be both a winner and a loser at the same time. |

How can he argue with CNN being fake and biased. They have been caught multiple times, even there employees admit it hence there ratings falling massively.

The ultra right on here have more in common with the far right than they do with the centre right hence the shoulder shrugging and 'so whats?' when it comes to the idea of neo-nazism getting more airtime and bigger. Enablers in short.
