The end of an era, Motty will cease commentating for the BBC at the end of this season:

Miserable and cantankerous. He may have been the voice of our footballing memories but he isn't half a git. I know a ton of sound engineers that will be happy to see him go.

Overrated boring bloke. Barry Davies was better as are a host of others.

Probably one of the last commentators now where I can't remember pre Motty - Henry Blofeld possibly, there have no doubt been better commentators, but he's lasted a long time.

He has certainly been the voice of football throughout my lifetime. There may have been better but not many have shown the longevity he has. Good luck to him.

He is the typical cliched commentator, still wears the old sheepskin

He has an instantly recognisable iconic voice but not to my taste, too much of a statto and over analysing situations.

Barry Davies and Brian Moore were the legends, commentators with great tones and were like they were on the sofa with you whereas Motson is like the irritating mate who seems to know everything

His live commentary used to be appalling.
I could clearly see the offside flag and Motty would be banging on about what a great goal it was and then, eventually, "Oh it's been given offside has it?"
Yes Motty that's what that free kick was all about.

He's got a good voice for it and knows his facts but just never really up with play.

You fed me, you bred me, I'll remember your name.
