I didn't even know this existed ?

Is it not another example of big business being allowed to screw us at every turn?

It's bad enough not enough houses being built for ordinary people but to allow them to screw people like this is crazy, i'm glad they are banning it but how was it even allowed in the first place?

First question I asked when I bought our house, is it freehold or leasehold?

If you're in a block of flats it'll be leasehold unless you own the whole block. I deliberately annoy a woman at work who thinks she's the bee's knees that she could get turfed out of her flat

And of course that her leasehold could be ramped right up, as per the article.

Been a bit on Lbc lately with people having flats compulsory purchased for say £400k then been told they can move back in to refurbished flats for £700k. All leaseholders effectively told they have to pay a lot more if they want to stay. If you're letting your flat out you can't even make any comments at proposal stage.

Also, on the subject of house building. All new projects have to have a certain amount of lower cost 'affordable' properties. To have any chance of getting one, you need to be on circa 90k a year!
Is that affordable?

Is 90k based on a mortgage of 360,000 for one person?

Oh! I was just trying to work out the figures. I think for a single person it's very hard indeed to get on a property ladder in large areas of the country unless you want to live in a shack. I dispute that there's no affordable housing anywhere though, and also would take issue with the lack of affordable housing for couples.

Got a mate who stupidly bought a masonette in amongst a block of them a few years back. Council decided to replace all the doors and windows and clad the outside, put a new roof on. There were 10 homes in the block so he had to pay 1/10th of the bill and got no say in the matter. Came to thousands and he had to remortgage to pay it. Very hard to find flats that are not leasehold but i am sure there is a rule stopping the lease being ramped right up. But like the above they get you to pay your share of the maintenance costs.

For people buying houses it's abhorrent and should be banned.

I got the impression from an article I read last year that there was no such law to prevent leasehold costs being ramped up. Will see if I can find it. Have a feeling that was also BBC.
