If we do play 3 4 3 as Frank de Boer has said where does that leave Andros Townsend. I can not see him being a wing back but nor can I see him playing up front .

Sakho not coming here, we moved on. Sakho is hard to manage and de Boer wouldn't want to spend most of his budget on a player that he doesn't know.

We could sell him to fund the purchase of a more suitable player for the system our Manager wishes to play. I would add that I do not think it is a good idea to decide on a playing formation without the players in place, better to play to your strengths. The best managers will adapt formation to suit situation and players available plus current form.

His best position is in a front three (with Zaha and Benteke), if we're going to persist with a 3-4-3, or on the opposite wing to Zaha, as last season. We should NOT be selling our best players, we should be improving the squad (I acknowledge you're opposed to selling).

Your point with respect to the best managers playing to a squads strengths is well made, especially as recruitment this window, to 'fit in' to with the 'new system' appears to be moribund. I'm surprised that we need much in the way of recruitment to play the 3-4-3 as we were led to believe that the current squad was ideally suited to that system.

It could be argued that FdB is trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear here. I have my fingers crossed that he hasn't been appointed on the basis that he could effect this revolution at (close to) nil cost because (1) the squad was already there to do it and (2) any shortfall could be made up from the academy. I can see how attractive such a proposition would be to the owners, particularly as it turns out they're looking to sell and will want to keep spending to a minimum, but I can equally see what a high risk strategy it is.

There is less than three weeks to Huddersfield and the sensible approach would be to get back to working on a system that plays to our strengths so that we can start putting points on the board. There's no reason why we can't be working on a 'plan B' (or even a future plan A), but that needs to be done in parallel with the basics and not instead of.

We have to remember de Boer wanted to make assessment on the squad before entering the transfer market. I'm sure there's funds. De Boer mentioned about needing extra players as the 12 to 14 players currently is not enough for a solid prem squad.

How come then we're allegedly about to spend a huge chunk of our budget on Calum Chambers?

Sell on fee maybe, can play in numerous positions. The price of English players always escalates and could be worth double in the space of 2 years if successful.
