(i know the spokesperson in the report said that it doesn't mean a decrease in the quality of meat but, hey, he would do though) Here's a telling quote from the report "Last year, we grew almost a billion birds, 95% indoors and 3.4% free range and 1% organic. If we tried to grow a billion birds a year organically, that would be a lot of land. It’s a balancing act, and it’s demand-driven. I don’t think we’ll see a change in systems without consumer demand. At the moment, that demand isn’t there.”

Shocking isn't it! I know that farmers were breeding chickens with six,yes six legs because of record sales of chicken 'drum-sticks'and they couldn't keep up with demand from Colonel Sanders etc. Trouble is no-one knows what they taste like 'cause they can't catch the basstards!!! Ollie's Dad,Ash.

Ollie's Dad,Ash. hey ollie's dad, truth is most chickens bodies are so overgrown from the drugs they're injected with that they can't even walk so i would think that most chickens are pretty easy to catch... as for 6 legged chickens... knowing how the meat industry operates would it be that surprising if people aren't already eating them without even knowing about it???? What the spokesman probably meant was that there was no decline in the quality of the meat as it's already pretty poor. Us oldies will remember a time when chicken tasted wonderful and was probably the most expensive meat to buy but that changed decades ago when the British public took the stance that cheap meat was theirs by right. I am fortunate enough to live near Packington organic pork farm where they also raise chickens on the same principles of real free range and decent feed and you can certainly taste the difference. A medium sized chicken is certainly more expensive at about £14 but it tastes like they used to in the old days and not like supermarket style cardboard. Nothing will ever change as people don't care enough. Whenever Jamie Oliver shows us how cruel modern intensive farming methods are the people will gasp with dismay and just carry on perpetuating the system by buying the product

Some meat is most definitely heinous murder considering what the poor things have to go through. Death camps basically. Any new trade deal with the US including importation of meat will only lower the standards as they are even less rigorous with animal welfare. What we want is more of those nice halal butchers. Surely, in this day and age, we have the technology to have video messages built into the packaging. The obvious point here is that this sort of intensive farming is a result of demand. The bigger the population grows, the more demand for food.

And it will get worse. I was speaking to a farmer yesterday, and he reported that the nation's vetinary practices are being hoovered up by the yanks. Which means that the US pharma companies will not be very far away.

Whilst I like the sentiment, and the nod to The Smiths, its more like animal cruelty offences, as murder is the unlawful ending of human life only. Its no more murder than abortion is. It might be cruel, inhumane and unnecessary suffering, but its not murder.
