Teachers' pay

Teachers and other public sector workers have seen quite a significant pay cut in real terms over the last few years. Given that Number Ten can find a billion quid down the back of the sofa for Norn Iron, I wonder if the unions shouldn't take collective action to try and get better conditions. Are there any HOL members who would support such a course of action?

Been something like a 15% cut in real terms. What with the stupid workload and the other crap that goes with it it's no wonder so many have done what I've done and jacked it in for the foreseeable.

As a fellow teacher on a 'sabbatical' for want of a better word, I'm sure you'd agree that the money ain't too bad, it's the workload and s***e curriculum.

Yep...I jacked...Far better off now. State sector teaching is in a crisis.....It's not the only one in the public sector either. The lax approach to training our own workforce by both parties when in power with just relying on incoming foreigners to do the work has to end. Start training British workers as a priority. Government needs to stand up and sort it out.

When you go into a secondary school the teachers are...in the main...on the young side...the only old ones are in management. If you walk into any new job and see that...it should set off alarm bells. Essentially it's a big turnover....ten years and plenty are burnt out....What's that stat? After three years 3 out of 5 newly qualified teachers have left.....They don't get sacked...they leave....and that's been during this economic crisis where plenty of people are just happy to have a job. But this isn't taking away from other difficult jobs. Teaching is very important, but it isn't a 'special case'...there are plenty of problem areas. Edited by Stirlingsays (05 Jul 2017 10.28pm)
