Give the local Salvation Army branch a call, they do out reach work, don't worry they won't try and recruit your Mum...

You're asking me what it's all about, and I can't tell you because I don't know what's going on myself.

My old man is 94, has lost much of his sight, much of his hearing and now has virtually no mobility.

His routine is getting a lift to Waitrose, handing a shopping list to one of the shop assistants who proceeds to assemble his produce.

Then it's a lift or taxi back.

Fortunately, he lives in Northampton, 60 miles away from me.

Over the past few years I had similar issues with my mother who was bed bound for several years up until she passed a year ago. Age concern were indeed very helpful and will give details of local businesses/people who can help. My mother was in the Bromley area but they should still be able to point you in the direction of a shopping service who phone up once a week and then hand deliver and put away your shopping - it's charitable so you only pay the cost of the shopping. If he likes to read then there is also a mobile library service who will deliver / collect on a monthly basis. You may not want to go down this route but I found social services extremely helpful over the years. If your mother is unfortunate to need to go into hospital then I believe they will automatically get involved. If not then as an interested party you can contact the local social services and request they do a vulnerable person review/assessment - they will then recommend any steps they feel you could take - in my case it was only recommendations until my mother was very poorly and they (rightly in my opinion) insisted that she needed 24 hour live in care. Usually it will be along the lines of making sure there is someone to keep an eye on him, maybe arrange for help to come in on a regular basis (be it once a week or several times daily for 30 mins or more at a time)and any changes to the house and his environment. Certain things they will do for free but most of it depends on your individual circumstances. You (or soc. services) can also get in contact with carelink who will provide your mother with a panic button if she has a fall or any other emergency and cannot get to a phone. This was extremely helpful and I found it very reassuring even though she did tend to use it inappropriately (please don't ask!!)
