"It [PGMOL] failed to appoint him to top matches that would challenge him on a regular basis." Which blows a hole a mile wide in the argument Willo's been making since nineteen-canteen that he is "rewarded" with the top fixtures because he is sooooo good.

I consistently stated that he was awarded 3 top finals in a season for the very reason that he is respected throughout the world as being one of the top of his profession.NO referee who was as bad as it is maked out on HOL would ever achieve such a status nor be rewarded as such.Clattenburg has earned the status and plaudits and I stand firmly behind all my comments on him. I have nothing further to add on this thread as it will only go one way and I have NO intention of dignifying any anti-Clattenburg tirade by many who are least qualified to comment on officiating. So no more from me - sorry to disappoint and all that.

Lost his credibility with that cup final fiasco, Emperor's new clothes seen through, revealed as s***e and papped off overseas with a fat pay cheque to avoid further embarrassment.

There were two performances last season that showed Clattenburg at his best and then not so much. Home to West Ham had him having to deal with an out of control Dwight Gayle. I don't know what got into him but Clattenburg ended up having to send him off. An obvious encroachment forced a retake, consistent fouling caused a yellow card. When Clattenburg tried to explain what he was doing, Gayle would have none of it and just went on playing recklessly, which forced the red card. It wasn't that the next foul wasn't terribly bad, it was that he was warned and didn't listen. The Cup Final was Clattenburg not really showing up. He looked tired, wasn't keeping up with play which caused him to call Wickham back and IMHO clearly not up to handling the big Wembley pitch. His facial expression when he went up for his medal was one of exasperation with his performance. I don't remember if Palace had a match with Clattenburg as ref this season. He was supposed to do Everton away but cancelled. He was 4th official for another match. It may be that the league didn't want him to do a Selhurst match although unpopular refs have been assigned constantly. Personally, I've had enough of Jon Moss and Mike Dean and could do with more of Martin Atkinson and Michael Oliver. This was, IMHO, not a good year for officiating and it has turned me from one who believed human players should be officiated by humans to a supporter of video review, provided it could be done in no more than a minute. That would mean the reviewer would be in the TV production truck with all monitors available so that the replays wouldn't have to racked one at a time, as is done in American sports. Those reviews can last an eternity and we don't want to have to play 20 minutes of stoppage time.

Madley and Marriner made the top 10...comfortably...with Pawson not far behind. That's all you need to know about the state of refereeing in the Premier League. There are three on that list who I would expect to do a decent job: Atkinson, Oliver and Taylor. So, unless we're playing a top 4 side, we have virtually zero chance of getting a competent referee.

I'm watching the England U-20 match against Costa Rica and the video refs (three man panel in a video room) ruled out a CR goal for offside. It took less than 30 seconds and the match ref indicated it was their call. If it works that well, bring it on for the coming season.

Watching that twxt Madley against Burnley some people want to follow his footsteps. just like Howard Webb a while ago, referees wanting to be filmstars and in the spotlights should not be referees.

I think the rule is that the ref adds 30 seconds to the game for each goal regardless, so a quick video review is not going to interrupt the flow of the game. If it takes longer - say a minute - he can add a minute at the end. Also, such technology would allow referees and assistants to finally allow the attacking player the benefit of the doubt for offside. They don't right now for fear of letting play continue to a goal that is later shown - by replay technology, no less - to have been offside. Knowing they have the replay tech as a backstop, they can let play continue if the call is marginal: if there's no goal, there's no harm; if there's a goal, let's take 30 seconds (while the scorer salsas with the corner flag) to make sure it was kosher. Given the amount of money now sloshing around in the Premier League, I cannot see why the stakeholders have such an objection to making sure the result is correct. There were similar objections in the NFL, but now I think you'll be hard-pressed to find anyone who gets upset solely because a play call was upheld or reversed by replay technology because the call is unimpeachably correct. Do you think Chelsea might have liked a video ref to review Arsenal's first goal in the FA Cup final? Or, closer to home, Snodgrass' tumble for a thoroughly undeserved penalty?

One last point here, at the risk of ruining everyone's day, let's think back to 1986 and "the Hand of God". In his recent memoir, Maradona recounted how he was trying desperately to get his teammates to come and celebrate the goal with him. They were expecting a free kick to England as was 98% of the world (i.e. everyone except those watching in Argentina...and Willo), but that stumpy cheat was begging them to join him in celebrating because he was the first to realise that the referee was going to allow it. Anyone wish they'd spent 30 seconds, or even a minute, to have another look at that one? In reality, it would take about 10 seconds: 9 seconds to rewind the tape and 1 second to see the handball.
