Most jobs are advertised on line now. Generally you get an automated response saying if we don't get back to you then you have been unsuccessful.

Online job ads generate enormous volume, usually it's just not feasible to respond individually.

Even if you write directly you are still affected by that as whoever receives your CV will probably be wading through loads of largely irrelevant responses.

It's getting worse as good jobs get more and more scarce.

I put an advert on indeed,experienced local plasterer wanted must have transport, had 90 odd replies, some of them couldn't spell in English, many didn't drive , had people from up north and from Ireland applying. I'm F*cked if I'd waste my time replying to them all, I'd already wasted enough time reading their CVs. Started 5 , 1s gone as he was 2 bob. The others are decent.

Not when people are applying for jobs when their skills don't match what's being looked for. I've had an 'experienced plaster wanted' and 'labourer wanted' , massively different requirements for each. Had the same people applying for both. F*ck them, don't deserve a response , time wasters.

Totally agree. I very rarely received any replies to job applications when I was looking for work, or even any responses from employment agencies. It could be very frustrating.

In future, it might be an idea to follow up your applications with a telephone enquiry a few days later to ask if the position is still open. If you are polite but persistent and show you have initiative, it may lead somewhere quicker than you realise.
