A breath of fresh air from Jamesey on the Burnley game: (quote) Clever teams win matches despite officialdom decisions and it is up to canny players to overcome hurdles by avoiding fouls not look for them and expect free kicks and penalties. Burnley didn’t win the game because of the refereeing. They won because they were far the better team on the day. After the continual whinging, moaning and blame seemingly about EVERY referee when we lose a game this is saying it how it is and not 'what might have been if the ref. had done his job' As the much maligned Willo continues to point out, referees are only human, have no benefit of video analysis, and react as they see it. To keep going on about 'anti Palace bias' and favouring the big teams We have had the benefit of incorrect decisions over the season and proportionately more against us but that is the nature of refereeing. I urge anyone who hasn't actually done the job to give it a go and then, just maybe, they will understand how b----y difficult it is. And don't get me started on the persecution of Hennessey! Refereeing and goalkeeping - sitting ducks for abuse. Carry on Jamesey and Willo - two voices of common sense on the HOL.

I point out serious referee errors wherever I see them, regardless of our performance or the result. Four red card offences not properly dealt with in three games is just not good enough, and we've got a player out injured (Tomkins) as a result of one of them and Wilf could've had a broken arm when he got thrown into the hoarding against Spurs. So this is not trivial or "just one of those things". At no point did I blame the result of Saturday's match on the officials. I merely pointed out that they had made a very serious error, and you can't deny that it changed the course of that game, even though we may still have lost it. It isn't good enough and I'm not going to apologise for saying so.

In my opinion Jamesey and Willo are a couple of tedious glass half empty merchants who won't be happy until Palace are back playing in the Third Division South.

Burnley didn’t win the game because of the refereeing. They won because they were far the better team on the day. This is correct - we were outclassed by a much less fatigued Burnley side all game. But if their keeper had been rightly sent off, the entire complexion of the game would have changed - and the complete lack of protection for Wilf throughout the game meant that one of our main attacking threats was nullified. And consider the Spurs game - did Spurs outclass us on the day? They certainly did not, and had Wanyama been sent off as he should have been, we could have capitalised on our first-half dominance. The attacks on referees lately might seem hyperbolic, but we've seen two absolutely shambolic refereeing displays in a row, and plenty of us were left seething.

Palace were tired, Burnley played well (especially in defence I thought), the match officials were dire. On balance Burnley deserved the win, we didn't, but that doesn't mean the officials didn't deserve a berating from the fans.

Add me to the list but we try not to be tedious and as I remember the Third Division South (first game 1949) only too well I think I can say for the three of us we will be most unhappy, not to say devastated, if we don't maintain our PL status

I'm not sure if the standard of refereeing has got worse over the years or if the multiple angles TV cameras can cover just brings errors (or misjudgements or whatever you want to call them) into sharper relief. What I'm certain of, however, is that questionable refereeing decisions take place every week across loads of matches. You'd think that, reading through these pages, Palace are unique in being on the receiving end of "odd" refereeing. We're not. Just a cursory look at other fans' forums will tell you this. This victim mentality and persecution complex is, frankly, embarrassing. I'm not siding with Willo here, by the way. I do genuinely believe that Clattenburg believes that he's at the centre of things, is worryingly egocentric for a referee and is/was overanxious to "make a name for himself" but I also believe that insufficient use is made of technology to umpire important things like penalty calls etc. Bottom line is, it's utterly futile (and increasingly boring) to go on and on and on and on, ad infinitum and ad nauseam about something that we, as fans, have absolutely no power to change. And in that, Jamesey is totally bang on the money.
