What do we all make of him? I'm not convinced. Giving Kyle Walker acres of space last night to run down the right wing. Noticed it quite a few times Walker was virtually left alone to do what he wanted. If Zaha wasn't out there tracking back I think Walker would have ben a lot more dangerous.

It's a tough one playing against wing backs. Looked like he was order to tuck in. And it's part of the wingers jobs to track back anyway.

Not convinced about him at left-back either.
He is one of those players who can play up front, out wide and has played at left-back of course but never really impresses that much in any position.
"Jack of all trades, master of none" ?
Maybe he will improve defensively under Allardyce and we will be talking about a good left-back in the future !

I think the last 2 games he's actually been pretty good, it seems defensively we play quite narrow to keep it tight and hard to break down, if he had been charging in to Kyle it would have open up gaps on the inside for the likes of Alli and Eriksen, who despite the goal, were both pretty ineffective for much of the game.

I heard people shouting at him when Walker got the ball on a couple of occasions, my conclusion was they weren't understanding the game and how to defend against Tottenham. If Schlupp goes out there he leaves a huge space in between where Alli or Eriksen can be a threat.

Townsend lost Walker on a couple of occasions, Schlupp's instructions were to maintain our compact shape.

That was my assessment of the first half anyway, second half it's difficult to tell as I'm seated in the opposite corner to where Walker was attacking us.

All that said, Schlupp did have a poor game in terms of his distribution, we had the chance to counter a few times down the left and he failed to make the pass. I rate him defensively but not so much attacking from what I've seen so far. I hope Van Aanholt starts vs Burnley.

Van aanholt is clearly superior. Schlupp looks an occasional weak link at the back and is clumsy going forward from left back. A good substitute winger i think. Still glad we bought him- we'd have been screwed when van aanholt got injured. Shrewd by allardyce

I think he's a winger who can be played at left back whereas van Aanholt is a left back who can overlap on the left wing very well. Schlupp's main attribute is his pace: putting him at left back is not exactly out of position. He had a good burrowing run at the bin dippers' defence on Sunday and nearly exposed them.

I wonder if Sam might not have removed Puncheon, moved Schlupp up to the wing, and brought van Aanholt in at left back. I think he was preparing van Aanholt when Sakho got injured and then decided (I don't know why) to replace Benteke with Campbell instead. I suppose he wanted to rest the latter, though.

People here were concerned about van Aanholt's defending when we bought him but after the first couple of matches and certainly since he scored that goal he's looked pretty good to me.

PVA was about to come on to help him out against Sissoko and Walker but then they scored and he was told to go and sit back down again.

Both Walker and Davies hugged the touchline for the whole game and were (i imagine) purposely told to do that to pull our 2 full backs out of position to open up the middle of the frontline where Alli and Kane work so effectively.

For most of that time, Ward and Schlupp stuck to their positioning and were not lured out to stick with them, which was good work.

Kudos to Townsend and Zaha who tracked back a lot to cover them when needed.

So in short, i think Schlupp actually played really well.

I think he's a bit dodgy too. Plays like a winger being asked to cover a LB position, and has no composure when defending. Recently he's done quite well but in the 2nd half yesterday, he kept tucking in too much and leaving too much space on the right for Spurs.

Which is the correct assessment, the few times where Walker got the ball in free space was down to Townsend or Zaha losing him.

Second half was a bit different because they matched our 4-1-4-1 formation but the first half Eriksen and Alli were looking to find the space in between the CB's and full-backs but because of Ward and Schlupp's discipline they hardly did.
