See that HMRC have raided and made several arrests at West Ham and Newcastle and over 180 HMRC officers are involoved. All to do with Tax and National Insurance fraud. Have often wondered how footballers are deemed Self Employed when their salary is paid by the same company each month. I worked in sales years ago and was self employed but the tax man put a stop to it as i was paid by one company all the time. Whats the difference? same with actors on soaps.

Footballers aren't self-employed but the majority will have their own limited companies for sponsorships, image rights etc. Professional footballers are paid through a payroll and have PAYE and NIC withheld at source just like a regular employee - or at least they should anyway. See Rangers in recent times who have been through the courts for trying to get away with something else. This looks like it's to do with transfer dealings so imagine it will likely be relating to payments to various parties relating to any transactions.

Footballers aren't self-employed but the majority will have their own limited companies for sponsorships, image rights etc.

Professional footballers are paid through a payroll and have PAYE and NIC withheld at source just like a regular employee - or at least they should anyway.

See Rangers in recent times who have been through the courts for trying to get away with something else.

This looks like it's to do with transfer dealings so imagine it will likely be relating to payments to various parties relating to any transactions.

He is probably an employee of his own Limited Company as many in a similar position tend to refer to themselves as self employed which of course they are not as they are under contract to the football club.

Can't think of any that have been made bankrupt while still playing, but owed tax could be related to image rights or commercial income (sponsorship, media appearances, etc). There has to be more to this than just that, or anyone who employs contractors for IT etc (i.e. all the big companies in the country) would be getting raided

From what i have read i think it is based on Image rights and players being paid vast amounts of money this way when they do not really have a public profile. Image rights are taxed at a lesser rate. not sure why as its all income.

Even then it will be down to tax schemes that have probably not been disclosed or actual evasion. If you disclosed under DOTAS it's very rare to get raided and most schemes are disclosed and HMRC discuss with the promoters of the scheme.
