Assad's decision to commit a war crime and use chemical weapons on citizens, changes matters.

Any regime using Sarin on its own people needs to be brought to heel.

Irrespective of who is actually guilty of these war crimes, I for one am happy to have given Russia cause to give second thoughts in the event of them thinking of an excursion into the Baltic states.

I agree that it is difficult to see why Assad would order such an attack in the current situation. However, everyone apart from Assad are saying that it was the government. It is probable that the USA has informants within the Syrian apparatus who would confirm it on way or another. I know Trump does not come across as the most thoughtful of leaders, but he would need more to go on than assumption before launching the response attack.

Assad has Chemical weapons, he is a total and utter narcissistic megalomaniac, and from his track record, wouldn't think twice of using whatever weapons he had at his disposal, specifically because he knows he has Russian backing.

I think more likely this was an event orchestrated by the Kremlin, to antagonise the USA into a response, which they got, the Russian paid for and built by Air Base was pummelled into next week rendering it useless as an airfield (59 Cruise missiles will do that). In turn (of course) Russia has now rescinded it's agreement to not engage in hostilities with American military personnel.

IMO It's a tester to see if USA will Step in to stop Putin (original nutter) invading the Balkan States, not forgetting that we now have 800 or so troops in Estonia already.

But what worries me is that it is trump and Putin moving the chess pieces around, two ego's that know no limits.

Still at least it will keep me in a job for a while. So every (hopefully not mushroom) cloud and all that.
