Free primary school meals for all paid for by introducing VAT on private school fees. The private educational system is incredibly divisive, protected and unfair. It advantages already advantaged families and shouldn't be supported in anyway by any government supposedly interested in encouraging social mobility. So on this at least I support Corbyn.

Hmmm, 20% rise on school fees might make it too pricey for the 20% of private school attendees whose parents earn a combined total of less than £50k pa. This pushes them into an already stretched state system which costs money. Is it really wise?

I quite like this approach to socialism, the idea of directly attributing taxation revenue gains to specific social programs. I don't mind paying higher tax on certain luxuaries, services or income. What I tend to object to is the way in which taxation revenue spending tends to be obfuscated into assorted costs and white elephants. Social programs, that support and encourage the less fortunate in society forwards should be encourages. I don't like the idea of welfare used as 'compensation' in areas of high unemployment - we should use revenue to attempt to relocate those people into jobs (either locally or geographically).

But continuing that argument, that 20% leaving private education, would surely result in a further drop in private school teachers, who would then have to find employment in the state system, increasing its teacher 'stock'.

Yep, government should be encouraging social mobility, not protecting those already with assets. Leg ups not hand outs. I'm only asking for equality of opportunity for our children not equality of outcome. Fairness. Edited by Stirlingsays (06 Apr 2017 1.55pm)

Why? Isn't that what income tax is for?

The fact that private schools are VAT exempt and have charitable status is bizarre.

If it is then it isn't doing a very good job is it. Social mobility in this country is a joke regardless of the type of government. All children should have access to the best available teachers. Private systems hoard them. We don't have a fire service or army that only serves an elite nor should we have an education system that is broken into two systems. I realise on this I'm pretty far left....But I've honestly never seen how not having equality of opportunity for children is acceptable. Edited by Stirlingsays (06 Apr 2017 2.09pm)

That's a different argument entirely. Well I'd say it's related....and to be fair it is kind of the point of the thread. Though I do recognize the usefulness of going off on tangents....Do it all the time myself.
