I have this memory of a game back in the mid 60s, away from home, where in the last second of the game we had a shot on goal. As the ball flew through the air the ref. blew for full-time. The ball continued on its way into the net but was disallowed as the whistle had gone a fraction of a second before it crossed the line.

Something tells me it was an away game at Birmingham. Does anyone else (of a certain age) recall this incident?

Think it was an Alan Stephenson header from a corner. Also think the referee was Clive Thomas, it was definitely at Birmingham and we lost by the odd goal but I don't know which game it was. He blew while the ball was in the air and a year or so after that they changed the rules to stop that from happening again.

Zaha, Williams, Murray, Ambrose, Scannell.

I have been looking back at some old Palace fixtures at Birmingham and I think it might have been the opening game of the season at St Andrews in 1965 when we went down 1-2.

Anyway thanks for confirming that I wasn't imagining this.

What rule change about ball being "In the air" ? Referee is sole arbiter of time and can blow whenever he likes.

But let's NOT get into a refereeing debate as it will only evolve into yet another wearisome WILLO thread.

No 'Goal Decision System' next season for us if we are relegated.

Of course you have to have vaguely looked like scoring for any decision system to be used.

Remember the Clive Allen one well as I was there at Coventry that day.

Got back and watched Coventry supporter/director Jimmy Hill on Match Of The Day defend the ref to the hilt - surprise surprise.

I was there as well, we were right in that corner wasn't we, which made it even harder to take because we had a perfect view of it flying in!!!

Jimmy Hill was a qualified referee and actually ran the line at Arsenal v Liverpool when the linesman got injured.Remember this well !
