Action Replay Flag Hornchurch 07 Feb 17 1.08pm Send a Private Message to Action Replay Add Action Replay as a friend

In today's (Feb 7, 2017) issue of the South London Press, our Action Replay column heralds the start of a regular new series looking back at how much the game has changed in so many ways – not always for the better, we hasten to add – and also what many of us miss from the 'olden days'.

Over the coming weeks we'll be dusting off the cobwebs and recalling the many things that made our long-lost youthful days as a supporter so special, or at least what we thought seemed good at the time.

It's true, despite the avarice and cynicism endemic in today's game (nay, society itself), there have been some progressive elements to applaud over the years. But, equally, as far as Action Replay is concerned anyway, too many traditional ideals have been sacrificed on the altar of greed.

In this Tuesday's paper, subjects we cover include:
Floodlights
Drop-ball
Shinpads
Slow Handclap
Smaller, lighter programmes
League Ladders

So please buy a copy of the paper and get in touch with your own memories and thoughts on what you miss about football's past. You can email columnist Tony McDonald at slpactionreplay@gmail.com

I look forward to hearing from you...

Roasted Chesnuts stalls dotted around the stadium nor
Hot dogs and burgers stalls with boiled onions!

Chants of Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeagles eagles booming around Selhurst

The alphabetic half-time scoreboard

Playing 3 matches in 4 days at Easter with no complaints

Football shirts with no sponsor's names on them

Rosettes

Bovril and Wagon Wheels (perhaps you can still get them?)

Large crowds going to watch FA Cup ties

I recall rattles !

And programmes which used to contain the 'Football League Review' in the middle.

And the days when one used to tie scarves to one's wrist.

And when teams used to come on to the pitch before the game separately so one would cheers ones team to the rafters whilst affording the 'Away' team a less than cordial welcome !

Mrs Minchella. Probably lost more bags than she sold, when she put her basket down to "do business". I can assure everyone I only ever paid for mine!!

Palace running out to "If I had a hammer" with the advertising boardings taking a hammering along to the song.
Not as good as "glad all over" but not bad.

All that sweeping of peanut shells on the Holmesdale Terrace after the game !

Those days when one could walk from Whitehorse to Holmesdale and vice versa to be behind the goal we were attacking !

And those darned bog rolls from Holmesdale toilets being thrown on to the pitch.

And of course the claret and blue walking sticks.

Good reading these threads brings back happy no Palace frills memories, What about old bill taking your laces off your boots? poles off your home made banners! I once had a good fishing rod confiscated

Silk scarves & sew on badges for the back of my jacket
& not forgetting the old and new flatterers.

Having my nose broken at Forest
Being able to wander around the Holmesdale and chat to friends who stood in the same place every game.
Paying at turnstile.

"Knees up mother Brown" on the Holmesdale terrace with supporters plummeting down the steps and some into the barriers. Bloody dangerous.

Not forgetting that grass bank at the back of the Holmesdale.
