I feel let down by him, Whilst he is out on a holiday playing in a tin pot tournament making up dance routines the club that pay his wages are struggling and need his services. He was happy not to play in the AFCON tournament before Pardew was sacked but changed his mind. Our chairman and new manager should have insisted on him staying. by the time he gets back we could be adrift. The loyalty should be to your club at times like this.

Once he was called up he couldn't refuse to go and the club couldn't refuse to release him. If he hadn't gone, we couldn't have played him. The fault lies with the failure to sign adequate cover. Isn't Townsend supposed to be the right-side wizard?

He's given every thing this season. Consistently digging us out of holes only to be completely let down by incompetent players. Imagine, you score a world class goal to dig your team out of a very tricky situation in the dying embers only to concede moments later, it must be immensely damaging. I am also upset that he has gone but I don't blame him at all and certainty refuse to blame this bad spell we will inevitably have on him.

If he didn't want to go he didn't have to. He's proper let us down now when we really need him most.

tin pot to you because you're not (I assume) African. If he's pledged his allegiance to IC then it's obvious he will want to represent them and he has every right to. Clubs shouldn't have any right to stop a player playing in an international.

Didn't see this thread, just posted on how much we miss Wilf's contribution on "we need a goalkeeper"thread.
Mentioned how much effort he puts into his defensive duties that nobody seems capable of doing as well as being an attacking player.
Wilf has let nobody down, read the posts re the rules of AFCON.

Tin pot? Behave, it's expected to have nearly 2.5 billion people watching the tournament. He's playing for the country he was born in and where his family grew up in. The tournament means so much to a lot of people and calling it tin pot is ignorant.

Agreed! But why does the tournament have to be played every 2 years? Why not run it alongside European Championship? Hugely disruptive for domestic programme.

I agree - he could have stayed and fought for a place in the England team. Instead he threw a wobbly and has badly let us down at a time when we needed him.

Professionally, his career, he has done exactly the right thing.

He won't be here next season and his cv if he plays well out there will be shining just that little bit brighter to attract suitors.

I don't think he would have gone if he thought he would be playing for us next season as he would not be wanting to help us achieve Championship status again by going.

I was just going to write something similar when this post popped up.
I have to say I feel a bit let down by him too.
Reading the other contributions I agree he has the right to okay for the country if his birth (even if after he has played countless u21 games and 2 full friendlies) but the timing was a little bit "if I am not going to okay for England now then I won't at all" ?
If he really wanted to play for Ivory Coast he would have done by now.
He was not so keen to play in al, the pony qualifiers?
The tournament is not tin pot but the format is ridiculous.
I am guessing every 2 years is a revenue building thing.
