Great article about Alan Woan. I remember him well as he was a player in the year that I first went to Selhurst as an eight year old.

Good to read your comments on Alan Woan, however for me it was Roy Summersby who was our main man behind Johnny Byrne. 60/61 was a great season, I was just 10 but remember many games well. Attendances were big, often was squashed up against the railings in the old enclosure by the players tunnel.

Indeed it was a great season. My first watching Palace. I remember Alan Woan. As you say in the article (which I thoroughly enjoyed) I remember him as appearing to be a rather lazy player, but who cares when he scored so many goals? My biggest regret that season was missing the first game, the 9-2 against Stanley. Odd that I remember it as 9-1. Ho hum, when you score 9 yourselves it doesn't really matter. Think we also had an 8-2 against hereford in the cup or am I mistaken? I often am.

If you are thinking of the same game as me (the only 8-2 I can remember), it was against Harwich and Parkeston in the first round in November 1963. Cliff Holton got a hat-trick that day.

Stanley scored first in that game that we went on to win 9-2. We beat Barrow 9-0 and Watford 8-1 but not sure it was the same season. My Dad was driving back from Cornwall and missed the Stanley game and he didn't believe me when I said we won 9-2 so I went out and got the Evening news classified edition to prove it - he was pig sick at missing out as normally he never missed a home game.

I also remember the times well. I first watched Palace as a 12 year old in 1958 and have been following them ever since, getting to the ground when I can. Full of great players and characters in those days. I remember watching training and having my Photo taken with some friends and the great Johnny Byrne all standing by the old Dug out (The photo sadly lost a long time ago). Accrington 9-2 was my first game too, as a 10 year old .... it was 1-1 after 3 minutes and 5-2 at half time. Byrne 4, Woan 3 and Heckman 2 were the scorers. I remember it like yesterday. The season we beat Watford 8-1, we then lost 4 in a row, before beating Barrow 9-0. Typical Palace ups and downs!! H & P was def 8-2 in the cup (I think Uphill was playing but might be wrong).

My first sight of Alan Woan was on 3rd January 1959 (I've had to look that up) and he was playing for Northampton. We had just come from winning three games in the space of 6 days (2 of them away) and I think everyone assumed we'd notch up another win. Northampton took the lead, and I had already left and was queueing at the bus stop when a roar went up. Before Sainsbury's, the spectators at the top of the Whitehorse Lane mud heap were visible from the road and we could see the boys jumping up and down. I don't know whether Woan scored, but I clearly remember this fair-haired prematurely balding forward giving us no end of trouble, and was very pleased when he joined us.
