So I was interested in whether my perception was right and we were unfit. So I went through every game and worked out what the result would have been if all goals (scored and conceded) between minutes 41-45+ and 86-90+ weren't counted.

Here's what I found*

Bournemouth 0-1
Spurs 0-1
West Bromwich 0-1
Everton 1-1
Sunderland 2-2
Stoke 4-0
Mboro 1-1
Liverpool 2-3
Leicester 1-2
West Ham 0-1
Swansea 4-3
Man City 1-2
Burnley 2-2
Watford 1-1
Chelsea 0-0
Man U 1-0
Hull 2-3
Southampton 2-0
Swansea 1-0
Arsenal 0-1
West ham 0-2
Everton 0-0

By my reckoning we would have 22 points and be 15th... and with a healthy gap to the relegation spots. There wouldn't have been so many consecutive losses either.

To be absolutely fair, it's a small sample size and very possible we were unlucky in a handful of games, creating a negative points swing.

But in my mind, we have struggled throughout the season to maintain intensity. Games became loose and broken toward the ends of halves and we frequently dropped deep to try and hang on.

Hopefully Allardyce can get our fitness right up very quickly -- a big ask in the depths of winter when he also has to re-teach the team basic defending.

*Apols for any errors. Done in good faith.

EDITED FOR WEST HAM AND EVERTON RESULTS. DO FEEL THERE ARE SIGNS FITNESS IS IMPROVING UNDER SA THOUGH.

Apparently big Sam is apalled with the fitness of the squad that Pards left for him. He said he's never seen a group of players so unfit in the premier league.

While not disagreeing with the physical fitness aspect, I think mental toughness is also a big factor.

It's easier to dig out that bit extra physically when you are winning, but our players looked wracked with anxiety.

Sadly, we have got into a habit of losing - 12 months of it now. That's not going to change over night.

Whilst it is true that poor fitness is not the only cause of conceding goals late in the game, it's also true that poor fitness causes other problems. It leads to increased incidence of injury (the second half of last season was ridiculous and it has continued somwhat into this), poor concentration, players going "missing", the need to rest players for some games when we would want them, and poor morale.

We saw fitness decline through last season, then we had a feeble pre-season which was more a jolly than preparation, and when this season started we were s***e. By the time AP was sent packing and Sam came in it was clear that our mental and physical fitness were an embarassment.

Many of the late goals we have conceded were also to do with pi** poor game management, tactics and organisation, but fitness impacts on all areas of our game.

THREAD nicked by the BBS. Nice.

Insufficient fitness has a huge impact on concentration. You play even the most basic level of sport and that is obvious.

I'm going to start asking for clarification of any post that starts with the word 'apparently'. This could mean anything from 'I've got no idea what I'm talking about but using the word apparently will make it sound more plausible' through to 'I'm good mates with Sammy Lee and he told me to my face that ...'. Could you clarify what we are dealing with here please?

I'm not sure whether 'dirtiness' is an auto-correct for something else, if it isn't, is it hard core p*** or dance moves we're talking about?!

Was an auto correct indeed. Info comes from a friend who is mates with a former player who is heavily involved in the game still. "Apparently" is added because I haven't heard big Sam say that himself. Not worth sharing stuff that you hear on here sometimes.

Regardless of source, we were absolutely dead after 70 minutes yesterday.

Anyone could see that.

Employee of the month is a good example of how someone can be both a winner and a loser at the same time.

If I were an athlete, whether that be a football player or a gymnast, I'd make sure I was in top shape to avoid injury. I wouldn't need somebody to keep me fit. I would only need to know what tactics or routine I had to perform.

But that's just me. I'm not an overpaid sportsman, so I can't blame a manager for me being unfit.

Just my tuppence on this endlessly regurgitated excuse.
