Why is LB Fryers on the right wing and why is Zaha on the left? Neither of those changes look ideal to me.

Oops got the sides mixed up. Now changed.
Can't bear to see another Townsend poor performance. At least Fryers can get a good cross in.

Hennessey
Tomkins - Dann - Delaney - Ward
Zaha - McArthur - Cabaye - Townsend
Ledley
Benteke

Pardew surely has to play McArthur in a deeper position simply due to the inept defensive performances of the rest of the midfield. I think Ledley is better going forward where his lack of athleticism is less exposed.

Townsend probably keeps his spot by the sheer fact there is no one else who could come in, he has at least been better defensively since the Swansea defeat.

That really doesn't make any sense. The further forward he plays, the more ground he has to cover. Southampton worked for Ledley because he sat very, very deep and just patrolled in front of the back four.

I think you're very likely to be correct with the possible difference that he'll swap McArthur and Cabaye, position-wise.

It worked against Southampton because they were very slow in building up the play and played a deep line, Ledley struggles against teams that press and play quickly when they have the ball. On Saturday he got dragged out wide for the 2nd and beaten for pace by Livermore for the 3rd. Neither he or Cabaye are reliable in those 2 sitting midfielder roles. Going forward he is at least good in the air and he does play neat one-two's that can trigger attacks.

Ledley really should play as an out and out defensive midfielder. Cabaye and McArthur fulfilling the more central midfield roles (Cabaye is an excellent interceptor of the ball, and McArthur has an all round midfield quality). Cabaye also can spit out a good diagional pass to Zaha and (Probbaly) Townsend, so they can hit the ball at full pace - something Ledley isn't great at.

Cabaye is too 'light' to be a full on defensive midfield.

Defensive midfielders aren't generally quick players. They need to be sturdy, good in the air, and able to anticipate the game, rather than rely on pace. Jedi and KG together were unbelievably good defensive partnership (and even solo Jedi was a class act in DM).

Same went for Shaun Derry. The good DM doesn't run, he covers space to protect the back four. You win balls in the air, put people under pressure, make tackles and when necessary take the player out. You don't have to make fancy passes, score goals - Your job is solely about choking the other team.
